12 x 16 Living Room

by Pittsburgh Needs Help

Here's my problem:

living room has large sofa and a love seat with 62" between them and an area rug in that space.

TV/Stereo is on 12' dimension in front of stairwell.

There are end tables on both sides of large sofa (96" give or take).

Front door enters direct into living room, there are 2 reclining arm chairs (not big ones) facing tv.

SO: If I got a coffee table that is 51" L x 24.5" wide, would it be stupid since it would be in the middle of the room?

More sensible to go with nesting accent tables?

Time to think carefully...

Unfortunately there's no right or wrong answer here...

...a lot depends on your own personal tastes and how you use your room.

While the larger coffee table would, undoubtedly, take up a lot of space, this may be space that you can afford to lose. By this I mean it's not where anyone walks, or in the way.

Many people like the feel of a coffee table in front of their seating, to position drinks, magazines, remote controls, books etc - and having a central focal point for attention like this, when seated, can mean the family feel more sociable around it.

Remember, a coffee table is low, so won't affect your eyeline so much as a taller table.

On the other hand, if a feeling of space is important to you - or you will often have to cross this space as part of a thoroughfare, you might want to consider the nest of tables instead.

(occasional 'excursions' into the space, so long as some access is possible, will probably be OK even with a table in the way, as they are at a slower speed, so it doesn't matter so much if you have to negotiate round something a bit more carefully)

A nest of tables can be brought out when required (and could perhaps replace the end tables by the sofa if space is tight).

However, if you think these will be out all the time, as taller tables they may actually feel they get in your way more than a low coffee table.

Its a complicated issue, so I hope this has helped provide some ideas for you to think about.

Yes - it is the main thoroughfare since the stairwell is at the far end (behind where tv, etc is) along the 12' dimension.

So to access, you would have to walk between sofa and table or loveseat and table.

Just hard when you fall in love with a piece of furniture and it will not work.

Oh well, life goes on.
