Bedroom Paint Color

by Kathy
(Allenton, WI)

Daughter's bedroom

Daughter's bedroom

Daughter's bedroom Daughter's bedroom 2

Hi,

We are remodeling our house and are doing a bedroom upstairs for our 8yr old daughter.

The room gets medium to low light. There is a big window on the north wall. The ceiling slants down on 2 sides and is a lighter pine(wood).

We put a forest wall mural on one wall and would like to paint the rest of the room green, but cannot pick the right green.

We'd like it to be a nature-inspired green that goes with the mural (which has lots of greens in it), and not be too light or too dark..a medium? green that has a rich warmth? to it possibly???

We do not want it to be too babyish or one you would definitely see in a child's room (lime, green apple etc) or too "dusty","pea soup" boring green.

I want to make sure its something my daughter will like (she wants "Tree Frog Green" which is very bright lime green).

That is definitely not the right color!(Way too bright and babyish).

I've been getting some suggestions of very greyish green colors, but they seem extremely dull.

I'd love something with a Kelly green or grass green hue to it, but I think those colors are way too dark.

It definitely has to go well with the mural.

Any suggestions of specific paint colors by name of color and who makes it would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at Behr, Pittsburgh paints, Glidden, Valspar, Ace and Sherwin-Williams.

We would like to paint as soon as possible.

Thanks!
Kathy

I am sending a picture...Sorry for the mess in the picture as I said we are remodeling.

Dreams of Green...
by: Charlotte

Hi Kathy

I love the woodland mural in the bedroom - it is beautiful, and think it will make a wonderful bedroom for a little girl.

You've got a stunning color combination going there, with the yellow-greens or the mural and the yellow-orange of the pine.

That's why I think you need to keep with a yellow-green for the paint color choice - to co-ordinate nicely with both of these colors already in the room.

The color you have already painted the air-grilles looks not too bad a shade (darkness-wise) but I think something a bit more yellow-y would blend with the mural a bit better.

Using yellow-y tones will also keep the room nice and light and cheerful looking - which is also good in rooms that don't get too much light.

I've picked out a couple of colors which I would choose if it were mine to decorate...

Of course, it is impossible to get an accurate representation of colors on a computer screen, so, matching a photo online to color swatches online is open to a lot of interpretation, and you should always get color samples and tester pots from the companies you would like to try out - in order to get a more accurate representation of the color, and, more importantly, to see how it looks and feels in your own room at home.

Colors may appear lighter in tester pots than how they will seem in your room, once you have painted the whole wall - so do bear this in mind - and if in doubt, choose one a couple of shades lighter.

Your own choice will of course vary according to how you want your room to feel, and the atmosphere you would like it to have - that's why it's very important to check the colors out for yourself in the room, first, to make sure its the look you are trying to achieve.

The colors I liked were:
  • Behr - Color Swatch 400B

  • Sherwin Williams - Hep Green (no. 6704) - see picture below

You could go darker, lighter, brighter or more muted, depending on how you feel you want the room to be like.

green paint bedroom

If you can't find a pre-mixed color you like, why not take a small sample of the mural itself to a paint mixers, and have it color matched exactly to be sure - or they might be able to do you the color but in a lighter shade?

I hope the suggestions have helped, and you will soon be able to finish your little girl's bedroom - and I hope she loves it!

Best wishes

More than one color?
by: Val

Charlotte, wouldn't an accent wall in another shade of green make the room more interesting?

Also, my personal choice for paint is Sherwin Williams. We have never been disappointed with the quality of their paint.

And I wouldn't think of painting out the pine.
That would just add to the magic woodland atmosphere.

Woodland Greens...
by: Charlotte

Hi Val

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

No, I agree, I like the pine too, and think it adds to the 'woodland' feel of the room.

If Kathy wanted to paint different greens in the room, I think deeper or paler tones of the same green would work best, as there is already quite a lot going on in there. Or perhaps a neutral (a pale white, cream, off white or beige) if she needed to lighten the feel up a bit.

I'm not sure there needs to be another 'accent' wall in there though, the woodland wall mural is the accent wall - and then there is the dramatic contrast between the green and orange, so there is already plenty of 'oomph' in the room.... but certainly different greens, or greens mixed with neutrals is another way of decorating the room, and could give the effect of a lovely dappled woodland feel, like the mural itself shows.

Thanks very much for your comments and suggestions, Val, very helpful :o)

Hope Kathy can find them useful too.

Woodland Wonderland...
by: Pauline

Maybe 'stippling' a mixture of yellow and green (matching the trees colour on the mural) doing a light yellow base and green/yello 'blobs' added with a piece of sponge?

As your daughter ages, you can add shelves, cupboards (storage) and hide anything that doesn't quite blend.

Just a thought as I saw the walls which would need painting, although you may be able to find matching wallpaper you can use instead of painting?

Another suggestion would be to use a largish mirror, or mirror tiles, on the wall opposite the mural to reflect part of the mural on the other side of the wall, and moveable lamps to determine light and shady areas, which would make it appear your daughter is sleeping in the middle of a forest.

The lamplights could bring out the warmer orangey colours too.

Maybe Place a frame around the mirror/mirrors if you think THAT might work..

Will try to get my paint shop pro software up and running if I can to show you what I mean.

Mirrors correctly used can completely alter doorways, window frames etc, bringing needed light into a lower light room. and are often at a reduced price in many stores.

Not able to recommend any of the named manufacturers of Paint in the USA as I live in the UK, where our paint manufacturers are differently named.

I love the room - wish it were mine to decorate- - but I would probably go over the top!!. So many ideas flooding through my mind...lol.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

Hope maybe some of the suggestions are worth contemplating, lol.

Cheers

More ideas....
by: Pauline

Using lamps, mirrors etc mean that they are movable so you can find the best place to put them on the wall/floor to get the effect that will please you all.

As your daughter gets older, these are also 'replaceable' at not too great a cost.

As furniture is added, look at furniture that can do two or three 'jobs' at once. I.e. wardrobes with enough room apart to have a table/desk between them; a 'shelf' fitted across the wardrobes and ' top boxes' put on top to store 'keepsakes' which do not need to be taken down too often.

Shelves over the desk for paper. books etc. and so on. developing each idea as is needed.

Maybe this furniture at the end of the room opposite the window?

Cheers

Wow Pauline - some more great ideas for Kathy - multi-functional furniture is always a good move.

And thinking about how the room can be changed to adapt to changing needs as Kathy's daughter gets older is a good idea that can help keep costs down in the long run.

Some more great design ideas Pauline - thanks so much for sharing.

Sure Kathy will find them very helpful.

Bedroom
by: Kathy

Thanks for the comments on wall color for my daughter's bedroom and what I should do in the room.

Could anyone give me specific colors (name of color and brand) I should look at? Some greens or any other colors you think would work.

Thanks!

Any more paint color suggestions?
by: Charlotte

Has anyone got any more/different paint color suggestions to help Kathy?

All contributions gratefully received...

Kathy, why not have a play around with uploading your photo to Sherwin Williams' site, here - you can try out a few colors to see how they look in your room (it's how I got the Hep Green wall in your photo on my earlier response).

I'm sure many other paint companies will also have similar tools on their websites which you can make use of.

This will give you a good idea of how the different colors will look - as I said before though - the finished result may look very different once your own lighting conditions in the room are taken into account, so always try it out with testers before you make your final decision.

Hope that helps.

Good luck with your makeover - I'm sure your daughter is going to love it!

Best wishes

Green Green Dancing Machine
by: Denise

Hi! Just found this page....I'm in decorating school and have done it my whole life.

Pittsburgh Paints has a line called "The Voice of Color" with many pamphlets covering combination colors in themes.

Try the one entitaled "AL FRESCO". It has some great greens to go with your mural...I do like the lime green they offer as it is not as old fashioned like the one were thinking of...

You can get small 2oz bottles to test on the walls...put stripes of diff colors on the window wall and watch it thru different times of day...

...also...maybe faux paint some tree branches coming down from the ceiling at various pointed or sprouting up from the floor or over the head board of the bed. use of brown...just branches...no leaves...wish I could show you a picture...

I've done this coming out of windows looking like trees were growing thru the window...now not big and thick, just take a few bare branchs from your yard and hold them up and follow the branch lines.

Do you get this? I hope so...it's a great conversation piece altho your mural is amazing!

Good luck...I'll keep my mind reeling!

Bedroom paint color
by: Kathy

Hi,
This question is for Denise that said the Pittsburgh lime green.

Don't you think that would be a bit dark since there is dark trim and the room only gets minimal light from the window?

Please let me know what you think or any other possible colors. Thanks!

You are in the best spot!
by: Charlotte

Hi Kathy

I appreciate your difficulties in making your final decision as to color, but really it is you who needs to make that decision.

We can only make suggestions, from a photo, of colors we think might look nice in there, or how we would decorate if it was ours - you have the advantage of being able to be in the room, and can see for yourself exactly how the light conditions affect the paint colors you test out on the walls, as well as knowing your own personal likes and tastes.

If you think after testing it in the room, that it does look too dark - then I think it is you who are to be the best judge of that - and perhaps try something similar but lighter.

If you are struggling with this, perhaps you could think about employing the services of an interior designer local to your area, who can visit the room with you, assess the light conditions in there, and help you choose the best color to suit yours and your daughter's likes and dislikes, and the light conditions in the room.

I'm sorry if this appears to be a little unhelpful, it's certainly not intended to be, but really, we can all only make suggestions for colors from a distance, and it is you, actually on the spot, who is best placed to fine tune these.

Why not try a few out for yourself, and see which ones you and your family actually like in there - which one 'feels right' - if you haven't found one that feels right yet, maybe you just need to keep looking.

Don't forget to make use of those really helpful paint manufacturers' online tools, where you can upload your photo, and try some colors out (check out the link in my previous comment), to see which ones appeal most before ordering the tester pots to try them out in situ.

Hope this is of assistance - and I do hope you find the perfect color for your daughter's bedroom soon!

It will look fab!

Best wishes

Charlotte

Mural and colors
by: Sally

What a fantastic mural! It's so hard choosing the right color isn't it but you've got some great suggestions from everyone.

Personally I'd keep the pine natural and have plain walls. I like the color Charlotte has added to your photo ... it really brings out those tones in the mural, leading you in to the trees.

Good luck with your quest, it will be worth it in the end.

Personal Artwork
by: denise

Was thinking about your daughters room and thought why not use a chair rail of the natural wood you have on the ceiling and paint the bottom the green to look like the grassy floor and the top a lighter off white to brighten the room...

...get some frames in browns and have your daughter make her own pictures of trees and leaves, fingerpainting or using the leaves as stencils.... frame em and hang em!

On the main V shaped wall, color it the green or even the off white cream...with a brown undertone...this may brighten the room and give your daughter a sense of pride and involvement.

I don't remember how old she is, but even if older she can continue to change up the pix, who knows she may choose to be an art major!

Bedroom Paint Color
by: Kathy

Hi..I'm so comfused now by all the suggestions of what color to go with for my daughter's bedroom that I'm thinking of maybe just going with either Grass cloth or corn Husk Green by Behr (both recommended at Home Depot), just to get the room painted.

I don't know if either is right, as they might be a bit blah.

I need an opinion on these colors, or maybe if anyone can recommend a color
(exact name/brand) that is as light as Corn Husk or lighter with a slight more hint of grass green to it
(not a bright color or too blah or celery or mint though).

I'm thinking maybe a VERY light outdoorsy color green that would go with any other bolder greens I may use as accents such as pillows etc.

If anyone knows of a color that may work please let me know.

If you have a photo of it in a room, that would be great.

Thanks!

Good choices...
by: Charlotte

Hi Kathy

Either of those 2 colors sound great - they are nice and subtle and should keep the room feeling nice and light and airy, and provide a good background for the woodland mural, and whatever other creative touches you'd like to put in, curtains, blinds, bedding etc.

Behr do tester pots/color samples, so to save time, money and effort try out both of these colors first in your room and see how they look, before making your final decision.

Good luck - should look great - and can't wait to see the final results!

Best wishes

Daughter's Bedroom Paint color
by: Anonymous

Hi..Now my daughter is thinking she wants a lighter beige color in her room.

I have gotten suggestions of going with a lighter beige, because green might be too much for the room, but would a lighter beige or creamy color look good with the mural and pine ceiling?

I don't want the color to blend in too much with the ceiling (ceiling is a bit lighter than in photo).

My daughter found a color she thinks she likes (but she constantly changes her mind). It's Soft Suede by Pittsburgh Paints.

I don't know if it's a good color or too close to the ceiling color?

Should I go with beige or cream? Should it be green?

I'd like the ceiling to stand out at least somewhat, so I'd have to be careful what beige/cream I'd go with.

If beige or cream would look good, I'd consider it. She could decorate with greens in bedding and pillows etc. and then it wouldn't be so "themey", just outdoorsy.

Maybe she would eventually get tired of so much green in the room???

If anyone could give me their opinion of that color or another color that would look good that won't be too close to the color of the pine (again pine is a bit dark in photo) and go well with the mural,

I would really appreciate any thoughts on this.

Thanks!

Kathy

Neutrals Work Well as a Backdrop
by: Charlotte

Hi Kathy

Any of the neutrals you mention will go with the ceiling and the murals - that's the beauty of neutral colors, they go well with nearly all other colors.

If you choose a beige tone, it will create a warm, natural, earthy feel to the room...

...whereas if you choose gray-toned neutrals the feeling will be cooler, and the greens and oranges of the wood will stand out more.

I think the color you've picked out is actually quite a nice mixture of cool (gray) and warm (beige) tones so should work well.

And you can then brighten the scheme up with green (or even beige/brown) accessories pictures etc.

It definitely won't be overpowering, like too much green might be... and your mural and the ceiling will stand out well (choose a neutral with gray tones in, like the one you mentioned, to make sure your ceiling stands out well against the wall color too)

A neutral color like this, too, is much easier to live with, and less likely that your daughter will get bored of it, or change her mind, as she might with the green - you will also be able to change the feel by changing accessories, bedding etc if you wish.

Hope that helps Kathy

Think we're getting there aren't we...

Best wishes

Charlotte
