Bench top and tile options for a cottage style kitchen

We have just put in a flatpack kitchen (antique white) looking great so far..

need help with the bench top.. the budget doesnt allow for the more expensive stone,granite,etc have been looking at laminex but soo many colours to choose from....

also need help with tile splashback and floor tile colour scheme...

really like cottage style decorating so any thoughts will be appreciated lisa

Neutral basis for country color...!

Hi Lisa

Your new kitchen sounds great! And it sounds like you've been working hard to make it look fantastic!

The antique white cabinets should be a great basis for any look you go for, and a great choice for a country kitchen look.

How about a wooden/butcher's block bench top? I always think this is a great look for a country kitchen - remember though, that real wood counter-tops will need regular oiling to keep them looking nice, and prevent cracking.

A laminate wood finish could be an option, or as you've mentioned there are many granite and stone effects laminate counter-tops that are reasonably priced, hard wearing and look great.

I think you need to decide what kind of color scheme you'd like to go for in your kitchen...

Do you like something cosy? soft and feminine? bright? fresh and clean looking?

It can be a great idea to choose the more long-lasting components of your kitchen in quite neutral tones - for example your tiles, countertops and flooring...

Soft and slightly 'warm' beiges, creams and taupes would go with the cream, and be in keeping with that country look...

As already mentioned you might also want to consider adding some wood, or wood-effect, for flooring and countertop, as wood is often an important aspect in a country-style kitchen.

Once you've got these basics sorted you can consider the colors for walls and accessories...

Soft terracottas and pinks can give a cosy, warm, rustic feel - and a Tuscan theme...

Soft greens (perhaps mixed with pinks) give a relaxed and natural air, and perhaps are better for smaller rooms than the 'warm' toned colors (with red or orange hints in)...

Soft yellows make a room feel cheery and bright...

Blues are a clean and fresh kind of color, and can give a 'clean' and spacious feel...

Deeper colors, such as red can also be used for a period, Victorian feel...

Or a bright striking yellow can make a real statement in your home...

Your accessories too, will really make the most difference in getting that perfect 'country kitchen' feel...

The choice is yours!
