Blinds for Windows
Types and Styles

Choosing blinds for windows. Read this information guide to choose the right style blind for your home.

Blinds are a very popular choice for window treatments these days. Blinds are pretty inexpensive, practical, and can give your home either a really smart, modern feel, or a pretty, traditional look, depending on the style you go for.

There are loads of different types and styles for window treatments and blinds for windows, so you will be sure to find a style that suits you just right.

Use simple roman, roller or venetian blinds just on their own, for a streamlined, modern feel. Or combine with full curtains, dress curtains or drapes for a softer and warmer feel.

For a more traditional, romantic or country style decorating feel, try a more decorative Austrian or Festoon style blind - these are quite 'busy' so are usually used on their own.

Roller Blinds

  • These types of blinds for windows are simply a round pole/rod with the blind wound around it.

  • The length/drop of the blind is adjustable, with a pulley cord at one side.

  • Roller blinds are made of a stiffened fabric - often plain, but these days can be nicely patterned too.

  • They are very cheap, easy to come across, and you can even buy kits for making your own!

Venetian Blinds
  • These are made from horizontal slats, of wood, plastic or metal, and held together with cords.

  • They are twisted to open or close the slats themselves, to filter the light - or the whole blind can be raised or lowered - making them very practical and flexible.

  • They are a modern, smart, quality option - especially when made of wood - and are very good for privacy.

  • They are annoying to dust -and time-consuming - but you can get special blind dusters, which do help (a little, anyway!).

Vertical Blinds
  • These are like Venetian Blinds, but the slats are larger, and arranged vertically, instead of horizontally.

  • The slats can be twisted, or the whole blind can slide to one side to open.

  • They are usually made of a stiffened fabric.

  • They are good for wide, floor length windows, but, purely on a personal level, they remind me too much of an office to have them in my house!

Roman Blinds
  • This is a simple, uncluttered, fabric blind. They are very popular - and rightly so - they can be bought ready made, made to measure, or even made yourself if you are a bit handy with a sewing machine - so you can get a Roman Blind in any fabric you like, to match your home decor.

  • Roman Blinds are a great choice of blinds for windows that don't have a great deal of space around them for curtains.

  • When closed, Roman Blinds are a flat, rectangle of fabric. When you pull a cord to open them, they fold upwards into 2 or 3 large, horizontal folds.

Austrian Blinds
  • An Austrian Blind is like a much fussier version of a Roman Blind. It has frilled edges, and opens up into very elaborate ruches and folds.

  • This is a very 'pretty' option for blinds for windows, and is very suitable for traditional home decorating schemes, country styles, romantic styles and country cottage decorating.

  • Just think though - will you actually want to bother dusting all those intricate folds that will really gather the dust.

Festoon Blinds
  • These are an even fuller version of the Austrian Blind.

London Blinds
  • These types of blinds for windows are a similar style to the Roman Blind. It uses inverted pleats, to give a more informal, softer look to the blind.

Tournament Blinds
  • This too, is a similar style of blind to a Roman Blind. It has a ribbon looped between each fold of the blind.

Pinoleum Blinds
  • These are made of very thin strips of wood, and are often made in the style of a Roman Blind.

  • These are very cheap, look good and are easy to put up.

  • My only criticism of this type of blinds for windows is that when you have your light on at night, you are still able to see through it! So don't buy one hoping for some privacy on an evening!

Bamboo Blinds
  • Bamboo blinds are very similar to these Pinoleum Blinds - but are made of very thin strips of bamboo.

  • These are in the style of a very simple roller blind - but where the rolling section is at the base of the blind rather than at the top.

  • Again, this is a very simple blind, and very cheap to buy - probably the cheapest style of blinds for windows!

  • But again, it is not great for privacy at night.

Whichever type of blind you choose for your home, you will find it a very practical and stylish choice for your window.

Use a blind on its own for a very modern, clutter-free look - or get the best of both worlds, and combine your blind with dress curtains, or even full curtains for extra warmth.
