Brown kitchen cabinets - color suggestions?

by Janet Hudson
(Fairless Hills Pa)

Kitchen colors

Kitchen colors

One, I am out of money....

We just had really nice dark brown hardwood floors installed.

Since then my lighter colored, vineer cabinet that are med dark brown stick out like a sore thumb!

A friend suggested changing the light yellow walls so that the color does'nt complement the cabinets so much.

I am thinking of going with a steel blue gray and eventually we will get new cabinets that are white with silver back splash.

I guess I am stuck on a wall color. The kitchen is long and large. You walk in off the main enrty hall. On either side is a playroom that is sunken and a dinning area.

The playroom is white with a half wall and the dinning is a dusty green color with black furnishings.

I like to "look through" rooms to see the next rooms color and I am not sure that this will be complementary.

We have had to spend a lot of money fixing mold issues in the house. This is the last room that we need to finish and I would like to change it to something that I can deal for the time being until we can afford to redo the counters and cabinets.

Any suggestions would be great!

Cheap and cheerful makeovers...
by: Charlotte

Hi Janet

Lovely new floor! ...but I see the problem with the 2 tones of wood not quite looking right together...

Try to keep in mind that you are at an intermediate stage with your plans, and it won't be like this forever...

In the meantime, there are a few things you can try to make it nicer to live with...

Painting the walls is one option...

-you could choose a color which brings together the 2 brown colors and complements both - orangey, brown, taupe shades could work - try to get mid to deep tones so that the wall color is not washed out by the deep browns of the cupboards and floor

-you could choose a color which contrasts nicely with both - a blue-green color would do this (picking up against the orange and red tones in the wood)

-as the browns are both considered as 'neutrals' in interior design you can really choose any color you want - but a bright and vibrant color would turn attention away from the 2 different browns and draw attention to the new, stronger color - hot fuschia pink, lime green, turquoise, bright yellow are all hot color trends that would work well...

...if you don't want to go the whole hog with such bright colors, even a few splashes of bright accent color in artwork, teatowels, crokery etc can all help

-have you considered painting your cabinet doors? - wood can be sanded, primed and painted, or melamine cabinets can be painted with a specialist melamine paint in quite a variety of colors, or even just plain white or cream...

...look out for specialist melamine or kitchen cupboard paint at your hardware store, and follow manufacturer's instructions carefully for a smooth finish.

More cheap and cheerful ways to makeover your kitchen here until you can do the full makeover.

Hope this has given you some thoughts and ways to proceed.

Good luck with your temporary makeover, and of course the full one later on.

Best wishes

Charlotte
