Children's Bedroom Decorating Ideas For Boys

• It is always best to use some of your child's ideas when planning and decorating his bedroom. However young, a boy who has played some part in decorating and creating his bedroom style, will feel a sense of ownership over his bedroom. He may even be inspired to keep it tidy - can't be bad!


• It will benefit both of you to work together, and share your input into your children's bedroom decorating ideas. Spend some enjoyable, quality time together, and turn it into a project you can both be proud to achieve together.


• Your source of inspiration for your children's bedroom decorating ideas should be your son himself. Together, think about his interests and hobbies - he probably has lots - cars, rockets and space, animals, tractors, trains, sport, football teams, boats, TV characters and shows. Take your inspiration from a favourite football kit or a racing car color. Maybe choose blue as your main color, if surfing or boats are his interest, or the green of a tennis court, if he likes tennis.


• Boys will naturally choose more sombre colors as they get older. The bright primary colors he may tend towards, as a little boy, may well seem childish to him in a couple of years time. So unless you will be willing to decorate again, or you are sure he won't change his mind, don't go too bright.


• Good colors for boys bedrooms are blues, greens and reds. Combine any of these with black and white, greys, browns or beiges, to get a 'cool' look your son will be happy with - not too 'childish' and definitely not too 'girly'. • If his tastes are quite consistent, add borders, stencils, wall transfers and murals, to really personalise his room, and give it real theme and style.

Trace the outline in pencil, then fill in with paint (ordinary emulsion tester pots will usually be perfect). • Even if your son is too young to help with the decorating, let him have his input by creating his own artwork - in colors to match the scheme, of course. Frame his artwork up, and hang it in pride of place. Let him choose his favourite photos or pictures to customise a bulletin board, or the spines of magazine files.


• If you want furniture that will last your son through childhood, adolescence and into young adulthood, choose quality furniture in a neutral color, that is sturdy and well put together.


• Alternatively, continue the color and style of the room, and paint second-hand or unfinished-wood furniture to match. Add stencils of cars, footballs, boats etc. to decorate.


• Look out for special children's beds in fun shapes - rockets, cars, boats. Make sure they are well made, and fit your theme. Otherwise, choose a neutral bed, which will last, and jazz it up with bright, themed bedding.


• Boys tend to be a bit messy and a bit rough (apologies to any boys that aren't ... I know they do exist!). So, choose hard-wearing items for his room. Carpets and fabrics should be tough, and washable. Dark colors, and patterns, show up stains less easily.


• Choose a big, durable rug, as a play area for trains, cars, cowboys etc. It will protect your carpet.


• Choose black-out fabrics for curtains and curtain linings to make sure that your child gets plenty of good quality sleep.


• Boys need lots of space for boisterous playing, so consider fold-away desks and chairs, to create lots more space.


• Make sure there is plenty of low-level storage, to encourage him to tidy his toys away (...good luck!).
