Christmas dining table

by Georgia
(NSW)

The room is empty, large and blank and we would like to give it a Christmas effect, especially the table for a Christmas party .

It is a long dining table and I was thinking about what colours would go together best. We would also like some advive on a centrepiece. Something original!

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Christmas planning, colors and themes...
by: Charlotte

Hello Georgia

Don't worry, you've got lots of time to plan for your Christmas party, to make sure it looks great and it's lots of fun.

There are colors which are traditionally seen as 'Christmassy', so for a Christmas feel you should think about using some of these.

Reds, greens and golds and silvers are traditional Christmas colors, but, these days all kinds of colors are used for Christmas decorations...

Icy blues, whites and silvers can give a winter wonderland kind of feel, and are especially useful if you want to create a cool, clean and spacious feel.

You can also look at more modern interpretations of Christmas colors - instead of reds and greens, you could try brilliant fuschia pinks and lime greens - a very contemporary Christmas style.

You could go down an 'elegant Christmas' route - and go for deep berry colors, rich purples and golds.

Do any of those colors take your fancy?

Once you've decided on a Christmas color scheme, you should certainly try to stick to it - a jumbled 'all-the-colors-under-the-sun' feel can work well, but it does need to be done with some skill - and is usually best avoided.

Also think about whether you want a theme? A traditional Christmas, with carved wooden toys and rustic looking ginger-bread men, hanging from tree branches...

A Santa and the eleves theme?

A winter wonderland theme with polar bears, reindeer, penguins?

A religious Christmas theme? ...with images of the baby Jesus and the nativity?

A culinary Christmas theme? Lots of reminders of Christmas food - cakes, sweets, turkeys, puddings, mince-pies, cookies?

How about a theme inspired by a favorite Christmas tradition or carol? 'Holly and the Ivy'? (bring in lots of greenery into the room)...

The Nutcracker? Twelve Days of Christmas?

Choosing a theme can really help you to keep your thoughts about your Christmas decorating on track, as you can choose bits and pieces to fit into your theme.

Your 'empty, large and blank' room sounds like it needs some considerable decorating to get into the Christmas spirit.

What could you put on the walls? And don't forget the ceilings..! Streamers, tinsel, wreaths and garlands of greenery...

Think about including a Christmas tree in your Christmas party room, even if you've already put one up elsewhere. It need only be small, but it will really add a bit of Christmas cheer.

You could create displays of wrapped parcels (they only need to be empty cardboard boxes) which help give the impression of a Christmas land-of-plenty.

Build up your Christmas table to be something luxurious with layers of table cloths...

It can be a good idea to have a large white table cloth on the table first, then with a colored (and/or patterned) table cloth over the top (slightly smaller to make sure you see the white one beneath)...

...and you could finish off with a table runner on top of that, too.

Set the table with your best crockery or china. You might even have special Christmas, or party, china. If you'd like to get new, you could choose some in one of your chosen Christmas colors, which could then quite happily be used the rest of the year, too.

Choose your napkins (serviettes) too, to go with your Christmas theme. If you want to go for paper napkins, you can quite cheaply choose some with Christmassy pictures or patterns on, to fit your theme and color scheme.

You will need to 'dress' your table enough to make it attractive, but not so much that it makes it awkward for food to be served, or people to see each other, or so that they are knocking things over!

Some candles make a nice table ornament, and you can choose to also sprinkle something over your table...

...perhaps bits of glitter, sprinkles or even greenery?

A nice poinsettia flower on each place setting could be a pretty way to greet each guest, or maybe a sprig of holly (do consider the prickly implications, there, though!)

A simple place card or name card with a Christmassy image is an easy way to brighten things up - and don't forget the crackers!

For your table setting center-piece, consider using real flowers, with Christmas greenery...

Or I like to create a Christmas-themed center-piece in a bowl, low box or wide vase, with a candle or candle and some Christmas decorations - baubles, tinsels, pine-cones, robins, ribbons, whatever you think suits your chosen theme.

Or go all out with a spectacular ice-sculpture!

I hope some of these ideas help you to plan your Christmas party theme. I'm sure once you have decided on the theme and color scheme you'd like, you'll have lots of fun getting creative and choosing decorations to go in there.

I hope these help - and I hope you and all your guests have a wonderful Christmas.

Do come back and tell us what theme you decided to go with, and ask if you'd like any more specific help or ideas with your Christmas room and table decorating.

Best wishes ....and a Happy Christmas,

Charlotte :)
