Classic gold play-room

Hello,

I have a spare bedroom in my house which has no furniture and currently being used as a play room for my 2 year old son.

I already have cream and gold sheers with matching valance and cushions covering the door between wall D and E as well as a large beige and brown carpet which covers the centre of the floor.

Against wall A I have a large gold picture frame with a countryside scene.

What I have in mind is placing a beige 3 seater sofa against wall A whilst hanging a flat screen TV against wall C.

I still want to leave the central area of the room empty for my son to play with his toys. Therefore do not want any coffee tables or similar furniture in the middle.

What do you think?

By the way the room is painted in a very light yellow, and do you have any suggestions of what I can hang against walls B and C so they don't look empty.

I prefer classical style rather than the modern one.

Thanks in advance,

Nadine

Practical and beautiful!
by: Charlotte

Hello Nadine

Your room sounds a lovely light, bright and welcoming space - and a great spot for your son's playroom.

Your idea of a sofa and TV sounds good - one thing that does spring to mind though is the distance between them, and comfortable viewing distance...

...do take a look at my page on layout for TV and hi-fi - you might not be intending on including an extensive hi-fi system in there, but it does have a useful table on minimum and maximum comfortable viewing distances and screen sizes.

If the distances don't suit your room, perhaps using walls B and E could be an option?

Another factor you may wish to consider if you are thinking of hanging the TV on the wall is the height you hang it at - the most comfortable height for viewing is at eye level when seated (or slightly below).

It sounds very sensible to keep the center of the room clear for more playing space - will you include plenty of storage units etc for tidying toys away in the space?

A small side table could go to the side of a sofa, rather than a coffee table in the center of the room, for you to put a cup of coffee, or a book or magazine.

You could hang more similar country scenes in gold frames on the walls, or perhaps a fabric wall hanging - tapestry or just a beautiful throw or purpose designed hanging in beautiful golds and satin or shimmery fabric to complement the sheers you've used at the doorway.

You could also put up shelves (wall shelves) or a shelving unit on wall B which would help to fill some of the space, and serve a practical purpose too.

Hope some of these ideas help.

Good luck with your room makeover - and I do hope your son spends may a happy hour playing in the room, while you relax in there.

Best wishes

Charlotte

Sofa-bed?
by: Charlotte

Hi again Nadine

I just wondered if you had thought about using a sofa-bed instead of just a sofa in your spare bedroom - then if people come to stay you can still put the room into action as a bedroom.

Do consider this carefully though, as sofa-beds tend to be quite a bit more expensive than just an ordinary sofa, and it can be that to get one that is comfortable to sleep on, you do sacrifice some comfort or durability for normal seating.

Just another idea to consider, anyway...

Charlotte x
