Colors in my Kitchen Makeover

by Gail
(Texas)

I am re-doing my kitchen. Here are all the elements:

Wall: Benjamin Moore Heaven on Earth (blue)

Floor: Procelain -Mirador - Cameo Beige

Countertops - Caesarstone - Raven

Backsplash - Whtie Carrara Marble (soft gray veining)

Stainless appliances

Cabinets - creamy white with perhaps a very light glaze

Island - African Iroko Wood

Question: I am being told my floor choice which has a soft beige veining will not work with the gray, blue tones in the rest of the kitchen.

Can I use the wood island and fabric on my chairs to pull the colors together. Or am I way off base.

I do not want to look towards brown tones for counters and backsplash and I am reluctant to go more white on the floor because it starts to feel to sterile.

HELP!

Try it out first... or nearly...
by: Charlotte

Hello Gail

Beiges and blues are an unusual color combination, but this does not necessarily mean that the combination will not work together.

In fact, on the color wheel that artists and interior designers use to plan their color schemes, oranges (which beiges and browns usually come from) and blues are positioned directly opposite - this means they are known as 'complementary colors' which give quite a strong, but pleasing, contrast when used together.

Although browns, beiges and blues can look lovely together, you do have to be careful mixing together warm and cool neutrals (beiges would be warm, while bluey greys would be cool) as this can lead to a color scheme that feels very unsettled and unbalanced.

The best thing to do is to gather together samples of all the elements you plan to use in your room, and see for yourself how they look together and whether you like the effect.

Try and include bigger samples of the larger elements in your room, and where the item is only intended as a small 'accent', scale the sample accordingly.

Arrange your samples as they would be seen in the room, for example flooring at the bottom, units, appliances in the middle, walls, curtains etc at the top - for a more realistic impression.

If you can't get samples of the items, promotional photos, or even your own snaps, can be added to your 'sample board' (although you may have to allow for slight color matching differences in this case).

I hope this gives you some things to consider for your decorating choices.

Good luck with your kitchen makeover!

Best wishes

Charlotte

One More Question
by: Anonymous

Hi....Thank you for the help. One more question: would a wood topped island....using an Iroko wood (or something similar) help pull all the elements together?

Warm wood tones...
by: Charlotte

Hello Gail

Yes, a wood work top may work well, as it has the warm, orangey tones that would work well with the beiges, and would contrast nicely with the blue tones.

Try adding a sample to your 'mix' and seeing how it all looks together.

Good luck with your kitchen makeover! Hope it all works out well!

Charlotte :o)
