Combining living room/dining room

by Yolanda
(Brooklyn)

I want to buy a dining set for the living room.

What would you consider appropriate, round table or square, since I have sectional sofas?

Thanks

Yolanda

Table decisions...
by: Charlotte

Hello Yolanda

When choosing a table for your living/dining area, there are a few factors you might like to consider...

- Size of the space, and free-space to move around the table safely...

...choose an appropriate sized table for your available space.

- Round tables can tend to look and feel smaller as they don't have the sharp corners projecting into the room, and can be easier to negotiate around in a small space.

- However, you may need to get a slightly larger round table so that you have adequate physical space for dining, as you lack the corner space of square styles.

- Consider the style and design of existing furniture when choosing your new table...

...If existing furniture and design features are angular in shape or style, a square table may suit you better. If it's all curves, a round table may go well.

- Also consider the look, size and style of the chairs to go with the table. How do they complement your existing style choices?

How tall are they? Tall chairs will appear to take up more space in your home than shorter ones.

How well do they fit under the table? Are chair positions when tucked under the table different for a round and a square version of the table? Would this suit the spot you'd like to put it in your home?

- What style and material would you like your table to be? Glass tables feel like they take up less space in your home, so if you feel short of space, a square glass table may still feel smaller in your home than a chunky, solid wood round one.

- What's your dining style? Some people naturally prefer circular dining than each person having a specified 'side' of the table - its just a personal thing.

- Safety - if you have or are intending to have kids, sharp corners can knock holes in little heads! My brother still has a scar!

Hope this information helps you make the right table choice for you and your home.

Happy hunting!

Best wishes

Charlotte
