Today I have created a sample board to show you a fresh and zesty contemporary decorating style using lemon yellow...
This is a fresh, clean look, with a spring like feel. It would be good for creating a bright, airy feel in any room, where you want to feel lively and alert.
This look could be used in pretty much any room of your house, from a light and airy living room, to bright kitchens and bathrooms, even fresh-feeling bedrooms.

Yellow is a particularly good color to focus the mind and is good for creativity, intellect, memory and studying - so in a home office, study or anywhere you need to think hard or have your wits about you would be a good place to try such a scheme.
Yellow is such a bright and welcoming color - it makes a lovely strong statement in any room you use it, and makes your home feel warm and inviting.
It also reflects the light around wonderfully well, so can help make your rooms feel lighter, brighter and airier.
The lemon yellow I have used in these decorating color schemes is particularly good for this, as it picks up on the cool green tones in the color yellow (rather than the warm orangey tones of certain yellows). This gives a greater feeling of space.
It is the zesty green tones in the lemon yellow which gives this contemporary decorating color scheme it's fresh, bright feel, so do take care that you choose appropriate yellows with a cool green undertone (rather than warm orange).
For this lovely airy feel in your home, keep the overall feel light and bright - mix your zesty lemons with cool creams and taupes, whites, greens and even silvers, greys and pale blues, for quite a light, 'shimmery' feel.
If you want to include accents for definition, or if you just want to warm up the whole feel a little, you can include:
- deeper greens
- deeper blues
- deep russets, oranges and reds
- darker neutrals - deeper greys and browns
For a fresh, light feel, any furniture should be pale in color, although you could go for either a very modern, streamlined style, or a more traditional look. Either will work well and still give an overall contemporary decorating feel.
Consider furniture and accessories in:
- pale woods
- white (you could paint existing furniture)
- reflective surfaces such as:
- chrome
- stainless steel
- mirrored
For an alternative look, dark woods can bring a bit of warmth, and would go well with accents of russet, orange or red.
Your soft furnishings and window treatments should be kept quite simple and streamlined to keep in with the contemporary decorating style.
Anything too big or fussy can overwhelm this bright and fresh look, and lose a little of the light and fresh feel.
Don't feel shy of patterns though - simple patterns of stripes, flowers and foliage in a contemporary style can add much interest and depth to your interior design scheme.
A suggestion of foliage in curtains, cushions etc can also give a really comforting and relaxing sense of nature which goes well with the fresh, spring-like feel of the look.
