Romantic Country Bathrooms Decorating

• An excellent way to get the romantic country bathrooms decorating look is to use tongue-and-groove wooden panelling (or, sheets of MDF with a routed tongue-and-groove pattern, which are really easy to use, but don't look quite as authentic, in my opinion).


• Tongue-and-groove panelling can be used floor to ceiling, or up to dado-rail height, or up to picture-rail height.


• If you decide to put tongue-and-groove up to picture-rail height, try fitting a narrow plate-rack at this level, for extra storage, or for displaying pretty, country-style bits and pieces.


• Try boxing in modern sanitary-ware with tongue-and-groove - box in the toilet cistern, create a vanity unit around your basin, and make your bath panel out of tongue-and-groove as well.


• Your tongue-and-groove panelling will generally fit a romantic country bathrooms decorating scheme better if it is painted, rather than left with a wood finish. Paint it in a solid color, or in a color-wash to allow the grain and beauty of the wood to show through.


• For a color-wash on wood -
  1. Dilute white, or colored, emulsion paint with water.
  2. Apply a little at a time, until you get the color and coverage you want.
  3. When dry, apply a few coats of clear matt varnish, to protect the wood from damp and splashes.


• Suitable colors for romantic country bathrooms decorating are cream and pastels - muted pinks, mint greens and aquas, lemons and lilacs. White is also a good color to use, especially for small bathrooms, but include accents of other colors, to stop it becoming too cold and clinical ( ... not a country feel at all!)






Try a soft color wash on the walls -
1. Select two different shades of the same color emulsion paint.
2. Apply the paler color to the wall as usual, and leave to dry.
3. Dilute the darker shade with a little water.
4. Apply using a wide brush, in criss-cross strokes.

• Soften up the look in the bathroom slightly - consider using fabric blinds, in plain or patterned fabric, or even curtains. Pick a pretty shower curtain, rather than a shower screen.

• Add a wooden toilet seat.


• For bathroom furniture, keep to wood and painted wood. A distressed finish (but not too tatty!) will really add to the country vibe. A chair would be perfect, if you have the space - choose wood or woven wicker.


• There's room for plenty of storage in a country style bathroom - try wicker, sea-grass or sisal baskets.


• Choose attractive country-style accessories - pictures in pretty frames, china, glass bottles and don't forget the jugs of blooming fresh or silk flowers.
