A kitchen that feels cheerful and sunny...
...no matter what time of day, or what the weather’s like?
That’s what I wanted in my kitchen, so I decided to makeover my kitchen, to get that lovely, sunny, country kitchen feel.
Our kitchen is quite large, (in contrast to the rest of our house!) and we live in a little cottage – actually in the country, so we thought that a welcoming country kitchen look would be perfect for our little house.
A few months ago, we took the opportunity of a bargain, and changed our tatty and dated pine cabinet doors for smart new chocolate oak doors, in the shaker style.
The doors are smart and streamlined, and quite a striking, dark color – they would go equally well in a modern or traditional kitchen, so I think they look great with a country kitchen decorating style.
Our previously pale blue walls looked cold and washed-out next to the rich color of the dark wood – not to mention a little tatty after so many scrapes and spillages – we were ready for a change!
We really wanted a cheery look in the kitchen, and for it to feel welcoming – especially as the main entrance to the house is through the kitchen.
I took a sunflower as my inspiration for the ‘new’ kitchen. The dark brown color reminded me of the sunflower centre – so I thought a striking yellow, and dark green would complete the country kitchen look in perfect style.
We chose a really rich, warm yellow and dark green for the tiles – and fitted them in a smart, chequerboard pattern.
This really brightens up the area under the cupboards – and gives a very cheery, country decorating feel.
We painted the walls in a bright, warm yellow. We were a little nervous that it might be too bright, but felt that we needed the intensity of color to go with the tiles and dark wood.
We are very pleased with the results – our slightly tatty kitchen now looks smart, clean, cheerful and gives off a really welcoming and friendly country decorating vibe.
The yellow is cheerful and bright – even on the dullest and wettest of days – exactly what we need for coping with these wet British Summers!
Going into my kitchen now always makes me smile and think of those beautiful country sunflowers that inspired my color choices…
I think that a gorgeous vase of big sunflowers on the kitchen table would be the perfect finishing touch to my sunshine yellow country kitchen decorating project …. so I hope my fiancé is reading this …!
