Curtain eyelets - steel or plastic?

I have a question on the rings used for eyelet curtains. I did a part-time interior decorating course and was told repeatedly that it was best to use the stainless steel rings for the eyelets as the plastic ones are not durable.

Yesterday I went to a curtainmaker to get a quote for living room curtains and I was told that it would be better to use the plastic rings as the stainless steel ones can rust and stain your fabric if they get wet and don't dry out thoroughly.

Which in your experience is better to use: steel or plastic?
