Yellow looks very striking used by itself for your decorating a home ideas, as it is such as strong and powerful color - or mixed with neutrals. But it does, of course, mix very well with combinations of other colors, with yellow as the main color, or the accent.
The simplest color scheme you can create with yellows is to mix it with other yellows. This isn't anywhere near as dull as it sounds...
...You can choose from the whole spectrum of yellows... from palest lemon, to deep mustards and golds.
Think about mixing pale and dark shades, but also consider the effects of mixing a lime-green-tinged yellow, with a tangerine-tinged yellow - this can give some quite subtle, but distinctly vibrant color scheme effects...
TIP: This sometimes works better for your decorating a home ideas if you mix a 'pure yellow' in with the scheme in some place.
Yellow with lilacs, purples and violets has got to be the most dramatic color combination with yellow.
Yellow is opposite purple on the interior design color wheel, which means this is a very striking color combination.
Try yellow with accents of purple (or vice versa - purple with accents of yellow). Be aware that it can be awkward to use equal amounts of yellow and purple in your scheme, as a 'flicker' effect can be produced, which is straining on the eyes. as well as emotionally and psychologically uncomfortable.
Purple gives a very regal effect to yellow, and can tone it down somewhat, as its opposite.
Mix and match with deep golds and purples, or paler lemons and lilacs.
For an added twist of interest mix pure yellow with red-violet and blue-violet, for something very unusual.
Green is a lovely color combination against yellow. It is a color mix found frequently in nature - think daffodils, primroses or sunflowers.
It gives a lovely fresh feel and can sometimes give a pretty country atmosphere too.
You can go for rich, deep golds and deepest green (these mix well with browns too), lime greens, or very pale lemons and greens.
This is quite a bright, fresh look, even using the paler shades, so if you want to tone it down a little, why not mix pale yellow with a deeper or darker green.
Try to mix yellow with greens that have a yellow-y tinge already (rather than a blue-y tinge) for the best effects.
Yellows and blue are another very popular color combination.
Blue's complementary (opposite) color on the interior design color wheel is orange, so you'll get very striking effects using orangey shades of yellow, together with blue. This gives quite a fresh feel to a room.
More muted shades of yellow and blue mixed together can give s beach or seaside type of feel.
Yellow, orange and pink is a lovely color combination, with 3 very bright, warm and friendly colors, that you can use in all different tones and shades.
Pale and pastel tones give a fresh and feminine feel, reminiscent of pretty florals.
Deeper and stronger shades give a zingy, hot look, suitable for ultra-modern looks, brave mixes of color, teen rooms and ethnic Asian, Indian or Mexican inspired decorating looks.
The 3 colors can be mixed together in equal tones an amount for a vibrant feel, or used with one or more as an accent in deeper tones.
Yellow and pink has got to be the ultimate 'pretty' combination - usualy in soft tones, pastel shades and with a decidedly feminine touch.
This can be quite a calming and soothing way of using yellows in your room. Take care to use soft pastel tones, unless deliberately after a 'battenberg cake' look!
As a primary color yellow also mixes well with the other primaries - red and blue!
If you leave these in the pure color forms, they are very suitable for kids' rooms, but can look a little 'childish' and 'primary school' for adult use.
Do experiment with mixing yellow with varying shades of red and blue, from turquoise and teal to pinks, purples and corals, for some very dramatic and interesting effects.
I'm sure that you won't be diappointed in your choice of decorating color schemes using yellow. Yellow is such a bold, welcoming color - it's bound to cheer up any room!

A word of warning with yellow - as a strong, warm color, even pale tones of yellow can make the walls of your room seem to 'advance' by a foot, or even more! In many rooms, this is compensate by the brightness the color brings, but do consider this factor when choosing yellow for small rooms.
