Let me just tell you, before we get properly started, about what is probably my funniest color schemes disaster - (before I studied professional interior design and learned the color rules!).

When we first moved into our previous house, the east facing bedroom was an ultra pale ice blue and lilac - quite sophisticated, but we found it a bit cold and clinical for a bedroom.

I think it was November or December - we chose a gorgeous deep rusty orange - 'Raw Umber'.

We loved it, it was warm and cosy. Just right for snuggling down in.

But then Spring came - the sun shone! On a morning the sun gleamed right into our east facing window. It woke us up - to a pulsating, throbbing, glowing orange room. We needed sunglasses! We couldn't live with it - and a week later we had repainted it - in a much gentler coffee tone.

So, even if you love a color - consider how it will look in your room. Think about all different times of the day - and all different seasons, and lighting effects.
