Decorating Teen Bedroom

decorating teen bedroom

Decorating teen bedroom - tips and advice for a practical and stylish teen girl's bedroom.

Create a gorgeous bedroom that keeps everyone happy.

It is important that a teenage girl can express herself through her own choice of color, theme and style, in her own bedroom.

As a teenage girl moves from child to woman, she must discover her true self and personality.

Expressing herself through her bedroom design and decor is a vital part of that.

  • Paint is the easiest and cheapest way to transform a room, and can have very dramatic effects.

  • Choose fab, bright, funky and fresh colors - hot pink and hot orange seem to be the 'hot' favourites with teenage girls - and rightly so, I think. Together, they make a kicking color combination. Combine either, or both, with white, for freshness, and accents of lime-green, and deeper, or paler, tones of each color.

  • A few funky motifs may be added - such as little flowers (in a bold, simple pattern), or polka-dots. Generally, steer clear of over-using patterns, stencils and murals. Flat, plain, brightly colored walls, give a much more modern, and sophisticated tone.

  • Do look out for some really colorful and dramatic wallpapers. If you find one you like, use it on one accent wall - behind the bed is a good place, as it enhances the bed as the focal point. Pick one color out of the pattern, for the other walls.

  • Do bear in mind that paint colors look much darker when they are actually on the wall, in your room. So, if you like one from a paint chart, consider buying the same color a couple of shades paler. Or, buy a tester pot, and try it out on a small area first (always a good idea!).

  • Check out which colors go well together, for your decorating color schemes.

  • Also, look at using emotional aspects of color in interior design - what mood will each color create in the room, when decorating a teen bedroom?

  • Walls are likely to be covered in posters from movies, or pop, or rock, stars. Try taking the inspiration, or color theme, for decorating a teen bedroom from a poster. For a sophisticated and classy look, try framing favourite posters in large, simple frames.

I think the best, and most unusual, choice of posters is at Allposters.com. They have an absolutely massive selection, suitable for decorating a teen bedroom, so you are sure to find something to your tastes. You can buy ready framed posters, or canvas prints there too. All the posters come really well packaged, so you don't need to worry about them getting squashed in the post, and the delivery is really fast too - so no unnecessary waiting around to get what you want. Browse for really great posters now. (In affiliation with AllPosters.com.)

  • Make sure a teenage girl's bedroom is a grown-up space. Bunk-beds and 'kiddy-furniture' just won't cut it. Choose quality, neutral furniture, that would be equally suited in a modern, adult home. Teenagers are forward looking, are are unlikely to go for a traditional feel to their room.

  • Friends calling in, and sleepovers, will be common - so consider extra seating and sleeping areas. Look at day-beds, sofa-beds or trundle beds. Blow-up air-mattresses will do just fine, if you are short of space, or money.

  • Teenage girls love clothes. A walk-in closet would be a dream-come-true. If you, or the room, can't stretch to this, take careful note of your wardrobe or closet requirements, and really consider how this could best be organised.

  • Homework is still likely to be a major factor in a teenage girl's life. A large desk may be a requirement, together with plenty of shelves, and storage for books and files. Add a large bulletin board, which you can customise to suit the room, for important notes and phone numbers.

  • Make-up and looking good is also a big interest to consider when decorating a teen bedroom. Consider a separate dressing table or vanity unit. And always include a good size, well lit, mirror. Can the desk double-up as a dressing-table too?

  • Provide plenty of storage for all the girly bits and pieces - very, very important! A combination of open and closed storage is a good idea. Some storage needs to be private. Some items re just calling out to be on display - such as favourite jewellery, scarves, photos of family and friends, as well as treasured trinkets.

  • Add lots of comfortable beanbags and floor cushions, to create a relaxing and welcoming chill-out zone.

  • Include at least one set of fairy lights, plus some trendy lamps, to create relaxed and intimate mood lighting.

For decorating a teen bedroom, use the teenager's own ideas of self-expression. A teenage girl's bedroom is an extension of her 'self' - so it must be a room which she is happy to work, relax and play in, and feels confident to socialise in, and show-off to friends.
