Designing a language lab with a Moroccan theme

by Bobbie
(Alexandria, VA)

Hi everybody. I could really use some help on this project. I'm trying to design and build a room, which is currently empty, into a Starbucks-ey type room for reading, studying, classroom or presentations.

For the general setup, I plan to have a rectangular or oval conference table in the center, most likely with office chairs around it.

On one of the short walls (the room is rectangular) I intend to have a Smart Board, or dry erase board, and a TV in order to show movies or presentations, and on the other three walls I intend to have easy chairs and bookcases, which will be filled with language study materials.

I plan to place lamps in the corners or on top of the bookcases if they are short enough.

In essence, I want to create a room that is comfortable to read and study in and also allows for generous seating options when an instructor comes in to teach the class.

However, I'm having difficulty picking colors for this merged conference room/study room/library.

Most of the students study Middle Eastern languages, so we decided to go with a Moroccan theme.

However, because this room is in a military building, I'm not sure how onlookers will feel about painting the walls orange or something.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a paint color to start with on the walls?

I was thinking about using builder's sand instead of a more expensive paint in order to produce textured walls.

And I'm also not sure if I should be trying to use mainly color to make the room appear Moroccan or if I should try and find decorations of some kind to suggest the theme.

What are your thoughts?

Moroccan Blue...?
by: Charlotte

Hi Bobbie

That sounds like a great project - and an opportunity for some really creative ideas.

Sounds like you already have a good grasp of the project - and have some really great ideas for how to tackle it.

For me a quintessentially Moroccan color is a rich cobalt blue - I feel that that too would perhaps be less intense than an orange - and easier for some to live with! ;o)

This blue was always an important color in Moroccan culture as it was said to ward away evil spirits - could be helpful for effective study!!

You could use as much or as little of this as you wanted - all over - or if you feel this might be a bit much, you could section off the walls with a chair rail/dado rail and/or picture rail and paint the lower and/or upper sections in the lovely deep blue, and the rest of the room in a crisp, clean white - a great color combination.

I would definitely think some more Moroccan style decorative touches would help with the overall feel of the room - how about a small amount of Moroccan styled stencilling on the walls...

...or using a Moroccan styled fretwork on furniture, shutters or just as a stencil for a Moroccan design on walls and furniture.

A few carefully chosen pieces - a picture frame, mirror, chandelier or lamp in the room can really help.

Or a few Moroccan styled fabrics as cushions, curtains etc...

...or even a small wall-plaque made of Moroccan design ceramic tiles...

...can all help to create the suggestion of a Moroccan theme, without needing to go overboard - and still being a professional and practical room in a military building.

Yes - using builder's sand can be a very good alternative to more expensive textured wall finishes. If you aren't used to using this try a little out first to gauge the quantities/proportions you will need to get the look you want for the room.

Hope these ideas help.

Good luck with your language lab project - sounds a great challenge!

More Moroccan interior design inspiration, here...

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)

Moroccan theme language lab
by: Pauline Finch-Lea

I agree with Charlotte about the rich Moroccan Blue for the focal colouring.

Areas of quiet study could be a paler, harmonising shade of blue, and for areas of activity you could bring in a red/tan colouring.

The idea being to define each area of use by careful, harmonising colour, maybe separated by vertical lines of all the colours you use.

'Middle East' is not essentially Moroccan, so maybe use pictures/Art works to show the different countries that the students are from.

Mosaic tiles can be used with great effect, and maybe multi-coloured seat-pads to make sitting for long periods more comfortable.

Thanks for the ideas :o)
by: Charlotte

Thanks very much for the ideas and suggestions Pauline - very helpful :o)

I particularly like the idea of multi-colored seat pads - a great way of making studying more appealing, and bringing in that quintessentially Moroccan theme too - you could look out for some Moroccan style cushions and seat pads to really bring your theme together...

...and can also use seat pads and cushions to bring in that typical brightly colored/multi-colored Moroccan feel, without having to go too overboard on the walls.

Some great ideas - thanks Pauline :o)
