Different finish for a table?

by Giselle
(MN)

First off, just discovered your site while looking for a solution to a design dilemma. Loved it and it now earned a "shortcut" on my desktop.

I just rearranged my furnitures, and so now I have this window that I think is begging for a console table.

My question is this, I have a set of furnitures - coffee table, tv table and a side table all in the same cherry finish.

So I read that buying furnitures that look the same makes it look like it came out of a furniture catalogue. How do I bring in a fresh look with a console table??

Little background: My wall is painted a light blue/gray and my sofas are beige. Still re-designing so Im thinking my accent color will be in the yellow/orange shades.

Thank you for any reply and design input!

Choose to blend or contrast with your new piece...
by: Charlotte

Hi Giselle

Thank you very much for your kind comments about my site... :o)

Your room sounds great - and I think the yellow/orange tones will be a fantastic complement to the gray and blue tones you already have - orange is opposite to blue on the color wheel, so it makes a very striking contrast - and the yellow touches will help keep the overall feel nice and bright and light - good choice!

I know exactly what you mean about getting everything the same making your room look too 'matchy', like it just came out of a catalogue...

Equally, you don't want to mix too many finishes, colors and looks, and end up looking like a messy jumble...

It's a fine line!

As you already have a few furniture pieces in the same finish, you could easily blend in something similar but a bit different - or something wildly different, if you preferred...

How about a piece in the same/similar cherry finish, but a slightly different style...

You might find as you are buying your new console table separately, any style and finish the same could be hard to find, so you will naturally choose something that fits in well, but isn't too 'matchy'.

Or you could go for something in a very similar style but with a slightly different toned wood - perhaps a more yellow tone? As these yellow and orange tones are the colors you'd like to include in your interior design scheme in future...

There is no problem with mixing different tones of wood together (so long as it's not all mixing and no matching!) but do spend some time considering how the 2 wood tones will look with each other (treat them as colors in their own right) - if both have warm orangey tones somewhere (yellow-orange, and red-orange, perhaps) they should look good together...

Also look at how the texture, finish and style of the wood will look together, too.

Remember, though, they aren't likely to be seen right next to each other, so any differences that might jar a little when seen next to each other, will be less obvious with other materials and colors (carpets, walls etc) inbetween.

A complete contrast, of style, wood tone, color etc, can make a really great accent or focal point out of your new console table...

Continues from above comment

Continues from above...

This can be achieved with a different wood finish, or style, or you could consider a metal, glass, mirrored or painted piece, to add a completely new design element into your room... or perhaps to pick up on a piece you already have, whether it's a color in the fireplace, painting, vase, shelving etc.

If you do choose to go for a contrast in your new console table it's a good idea to add a few matching pieces (color or style wise) somewhere in the room, just to achieve some unity of design - just a very few small items, cushions, accessories, artwork etc can really help with this.

I hope these ideas have helped you with your decision.

Please don't hesitate to ask more questions if you aren't sure, and do come back and let us know what you decide for your console table

Good luck with your room makeover

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
