Disapointing living area's colors :(

by Lama
(Sydney, Australia)

Dear there,

U can't believe how happy I'm to find such a helpful website! it's over than great, really!!

My problem is sooo disappointing. I'm a big fan of decorating ideas, those of making a regular place of ur living turn into heaven but I'm now disapointed of my big mistakes...

First I'd like to give u a brief about the room discription:

1) it's very small area, arranged in a L-Shape because the other quarter is being used for the kitchen

2) Kitchen is with the living area, the counter wall of it is colored by purple.

3) Also the wall with the entrance is painted with the same purple color

4) the rest of the walls are colored by cream color.

5) the floor is brown-temper floor.

6) there's a backyard attached to the living area, with a glassed door.

What I made was,
I bought a very simple dining table with a buffet (I don't like them actually!) and I chose the seat covers as stripes of light green that's more like lime, with small lines of purple.
I still didn't get covers for the table nor for the buffet.

I got a corner-sofa (L-shaped) with a setting bench.
The colors of them are (which is the big mistake I made) Paige, brown and chocolate.
The sofa's base is chocolate, the covers of the seats are paige with flowers drawing of brown color.

The bench's base is also chocolate, and the face of it is stripes of paige, brown, cremey. Which I feel like are very boring colors and do not add life to my living area.

I also feel like I'm stuck with colors, I need some outer color to add life to the place, can I add pink (my favourite) or red?? or it should be stuck with the golden and yellow :(

Please advice me back soon i'm sooo depressed and I'm in a need of an urgent help.

kind regards,
Lama

Go with PINK (and maybe lime)
by: Charlotte

Hi Lama

Thanks very much for your kind comments about my website.

Don't be too disappointed with your room, I think it sounds great - obviously there are some points that you aren't happy with, but you needn't let them take over your whole design scheme.

It seems to me that it is the sofa and seating that is spoiling the whole effect for you.

And I think you are right, you do need some nice bright colors in there. If you love pink, I do think pink would go nicely. And you could get a red to match as well.

I imagine your purple has blue-y tinges/undertones in it - in this case, choose pinks (or reds) with blue-y tones in as well.

It is possible to combine orange-y reds with purples, but you MUST also include the bright, primary red (and bluey-reds) in your scheme too.

A little lime would be OK too, as you already have it in your scheme, and it goes well with pink especially (but less so with red, though!!)

If you are choosing more than one color for your 'accent', always choose one color to be the main color, and add the other(s) in small amounts.

There are several options you have to introduce these bright colors into your room scheme, and don't worry, none of them include a major overhaul or too much expense...

You could just try adding accessories of your chosen color or colors into your room - things like curtains (or adding a little trimming on current curtains) cushions, vases, pictures etc. This will brighten the whole feel of the room, and distract the eye from looking at the sofa, and bits you want to draw attention away from.

You could also add throws, in neutral colors (such as cream, white etc) to your seating areas to cover the parts you don't like.

Or, you could have your sofa and seating re-covered, either with loose covers, or professionally re-upholstered, in a color of your choice.

I hope this has given you some ideas for what to do now, with your living area.

I do hope your experience hasn't put you off interior design and decorating in the future...

good luck with this, and all your decorating in the future

Best Wishes

Charlotte :o)

more questions
by: Lama

Dear Charlotte,

I think I did the right thing by consulting you and taking your opinions.

I have two questions for u to ask,

1) what do u mean by adding (y) to the end of a color; such as, Orange-y, Purple-y, sunshine-y...

2) What do u think of adding the color Fuschia to the scheme, with maybe a little touch of lime as u mentioned.

Do u think it's gonna look nice or too much??

Regards,
Lama

Go for it!

Hi Lama

Very nice to hear back from you.

Firstly - 'y' - this just means orangeish or blueish (for example). I'm not sure if these are correct color terms, or even spelling (most likely not!) but it is just a word to mean 'not necessarily 'pure' orange or blue, just a color with a lot of blue(y) tones in it' (by 'pure' I am meaning the primary or secondary colors on a color-wheel - the 'blue-y' colors would be the blue-type colors surrounding pure blue on the color wheel)

Secondly - in principle I do think that fuschia (bright pink/hot pink) would be a suitable addition. Choose one that definitely has the blue tones in it (most fuschia-type colors have blue tones in anyway) and buy a tester pot, if you are painting at all, or ask for a sample of other products, to check out how it looks in your room, with the other colors.

Don't be tempted to use too much - unless you are after a very bold and striking effect - as it is a very strong color.

Hot pink does look good with a small amount of lime, and does look good against neutrals such as brown. It is also alongside the purple tones on the color wheel - which means that it should look good with these colors too.

Of course, the final decision must rest with you, as it is your room, and you will have a much better idea of the subtleties of color and tone in there, as well as what suits your personality, but I think it should look striking, modern and cheerful.

I hope that your decorating plans work out well.

Best wishes and wishing you many happy hours in your revitalised room.

Kind regards

Charlotte

disappointing living colors
by: Maria

From what I have gathered, the purple wall...does it have more blue/red or lighter?

Pink is my fav too along with red!! Pink works well with brown and beige, and lime.

Since Brown is a strong color, maybe use magenta, with pink, and lime green with pink and then red, and accent with choc brown, such as the things that are not easy to change.

Accent with pillows, vases, flowers. lamps shades. Clear vase with colored marbles and flowers, splash some red here and there.
