Drapes for tall ceilings

I have 20 foot ceilings in my living room. There are windows closer to the ceiling and also windows below, normal height from the floor.

I'm struggling with how to use drapes. If done properly, I think the drapes can pull the room together and give it a more cozy, warm feel, rather than cold and simple as it is now.

Would it look odd to have the curtains above the lower windows and not floor to ceiling?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback!!

Cosy curtains....

I agree I think drapes will definitely make the room feel more warm and cosy...

...as to whether floor to ceiling drapes are the right choice....

-what sort of windows are they? Are the upper and lower windows the same?

-are the upper windows proper windows? or more like just 'skylights' (ie simple glass for letting the light through)?

-is there much wall above the upper windows?

What I'm trying to get at is whether these windows were designed to be treated the same? Or as separate entities?

If you think they were designed to be treated as one, then I think definitely floor to ceiling drapes would look best...

...you may be able to put some artwork? or wall hangings/fabric wall hangings in between upper and lower windows if the gap looks strange.

If the upper windows weren't really designed to be the same windows as the lower ones, just to let light in, you might be able to get away with just using drapes on the lower ones only.

Do you have a photograph? It would be good to see what they looked like.

Maybe use 'swags' across the top of the higher windows, then let the drapes fall partway across those top windows.

If you choose a matching 'tie-back' which could be placed at the top of the lower windows, with the drapes then falling either side of those lower windows.

This would bring the windows together, and use just one pair of curtains.
