Entrance hall with an indoor plant box

by karen
(gauteng, South Africa)

An old fashioned (1980s) entrance hall with facebrick plant box currently planted with synthetic plants!

I have a couple of ideas:

1) Fill the plant box with ground to top - cover ground with large pebbles (white) - instead of planting in the boxes - arrange beautiful colourful, different sized pots, with plants in different height, size, etc.
Use box frames on wall for ornaments, to store keys, sunglasses, etc.

2) As above, but cladd wall in stone - no box frames

3) Cover plant box with wood and use as a stool/storage, with colourful cushions, etc, and a beautiful large mirror

What do you think?

You have some creative ideas Karen... :o)
by: Charlotte

Hi Karen

It sounds like you already have some great ideas for converting your plant box into something more suitable for your home...

I think putting real plants in, rather than synthetic ones, would really make a big difference, and make your hallway seem very welcoming (assuming of course, it is light enough for real plants to survive in there).

Cladding the box with wood seems an excellent choice too - this, I think, would make it fit more with the interior of a home, and could be painted white, for a light, fresh feel, or whichever color you chose, to match with the decor of your home.

Although keeping the box for plants is a lovely way of bringing life and nature into your home, and a welcoming feel to your hallway, if you are short of space and/or feel a more practical use is a better idea, then this is definitely the way to go...

Would extra storage be useful, for all those keys, letters, sunglasses etc? ...and/or do you need somewhere to sit down to put shoes on or take them off, or to sit and talk on the phone (if your phone point is nearby - I know people do quite often have them in their hallways)

Some other ideas...

- what about a storage box for shoes?

- hanging hooks on the wall above could turn it into a whole storage area for coats, shoes, hats etc.

- display area for vases/flowers etc?

I think there are lots of creative ways in which you could use this plant box, so you just need to decide now which would fit best with the way you use your hallway, or the way you would like to use your hallway... so that you get the best choice for you.

Good luck with your plant box makeover - it sounds a great little project to get your teeth into...

...do let us know how it turns out, and if you have access to a digital camera, do send us a piccy of your finished project - I'd love to see it.

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
