How can I combine my family pictures, pictures of my kids, etc, with wall art to make it look tasteful and not tacky?

Family fun with art...

Hi Betty

A very valid question I think! Its great to have photos of those you love around you, but of course, this can sometimes distract from the interior design scheme you had in mind, and beautiful pictures and artworks you already have.

I hope some of these ideas can help...

-what about a 'rogues gallery'? For example in a hallway, bathroom, or going up the stairs? Keep all your family pictures together and make a real 'feature' out of your pictures.

Matching frames can help with this - if you don't want to buy all new ones, use spray paint to paint existing frames all the same color - you could even try painting them all in an interesting or quirky color - turqouise, purple, red, green?

-If you'd like to integrate pictures all in one place, matching frames can also help with this too.

-Try to choose family photos with a matching color scheme to your artworks - are your artworks predominantly pinks and greens, perhaps? Then choose family photos with these colors in predominance too.

-Or do you have artwork on a particular theme? Wild animals? Choose family photos with animals in too. Architecture? - snaps taken with beautiful buildings in shot. Landscapes? Family pictures taken on countryside days out. If you don't have any to suit already, you could arrange a family day out and appoint a family photographer to get your perfect shots.

-Invest in some professional photos of the family - you could even specify a location or color scheme you'd like that you think would fit in with existing artwork or your interior design scheme.

-Why not go for an 'arty' look with your family photos - for me nothing says 'arty' more than black and white - and these photos will intermingle perfectly with other black and white photos you might have.

You could employ a professional photographer to take some lovely black and white shots of the family, or transform some of your favorites into black and white yourself. You will be amazed how different they look.

If you don't have your own digital photo software, try picnik.com - go onto the 'create' screen and try changing your photo into black and white (or even sepia for a more traditional look) - once you get into it you'll find lots of other effects you can play about with.

-It might be quite difficult to display 'artwork' right next to family photos and for them to 'gel' nicely, so where possible try to keep the 2 genres separate - perhaps on different walls? Or art over the mantel and family photos on the mantel?

I do hope some of these ideas help you Betty, and you can soon enjoy having all your family around you looking in keeping with your interior design.
