Family room and adjacent dining room

by Mimi
(Milford, MI USA)

Just purchased a house on Lake Michigan. Very tall ceilings, walls of windows, lots and lots of natural light and views of the beach and lake.

I want it to have a "seashore" theme but not cutesy.

I want to use lots of natural materials and keep the colors blue, sand and white.

For the dining room, I have my eye on a rectangular farmhouse-type table with a distressed wood top but the apron and legs are painted white.

I'd like 6 rattan chairs to go around the table.

I'm trying to keep things simple and more contemporary, not ultra modern but just simple.

So I'd rather not use the old-style wicker type chairs.

I was in a local furniture store and they have these rattan chairs that are simple but have rounded arm rests and are not as contemporary-looking as I'd prefer but I sat in one and it's absolutely one of the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat in!

It has a plump cushion on the seat and on the back. I've never sat in a dining chair as comfortable as this!

But I prefer a woven chair with straight lines, like one that Crate and Barrel is selling. Pottery Barn also has a cute new chair called the Wingate and it has simpler lines than the comfy one.

Here is my question: Do I go with COMFORT and use colors that will look great? Or do I put style over comfort?

Please help!

I can't afford to make mistakes on my purchases as I'll have to live with them for a long time!

My second question is this:

I have a sleep sofa in blue denim from Ethan Allen.

I want to get two comfy lounge chairs and a chaise to use in the family room with that sofa.

I, again, love the idea of using a woven chair.

The ones I like come in so many finishes. Should I get the lounge chairs, chaise and 6 dining room chairs all in a painted wicker (like white? or light blue?) or get a natural (light tan) colored finish?

Any advice will be appreciated!

Seashore Style Choices... decisions decisions...!
by: Charlotte

Hello Mimi

Your new house sounds absolutely gorgeous! And what great views!

Your home decor color and style choices sound like they will fit the house and location perfectly!

I think for your dining room, I would say, what do you want your room for... to live in and be comfortable? ...or to look at?

Will your room make you happier if you can relax and be comfortable there, enjoy a meal and relax afterwards, perhaps chat with family and friends over another glass of wine, or a coffee...?

Or what if it looks great but you don't fancy sticking around as it's hard to relax in there, and not that comfortable?

In rooms that you use a lot, personally I think comfort and practicality are still the most important aspects - but this doesn't mean you need to sacrifice style completely.

You can still get the look you want, including contemporary and up to the minute styles in other parts of your design to get that overall contemporary feel...

...and in the long run you may find that your chairs where the styling isn't quite so contemporary are more timeless in style and won't date as quickly.

For your chair color choices and lounge chairs...

- If you can see through to each room when you are in the other, it is a good decision to keep all chair color/style choices the same/similar.

- Blue sounds like it will go well with your sofa - although you should certainly check that the particular blues will go well together, as it isn't always the case!

- However, if you may want to change your decor in future, one of the more neutral colors will mean you have more color options in the long term future (or will only need to change/recover your sofa).

- White is a nice choice for keeping it all light, bright and airy - although too much white can feel a bit stark for some people, and white can be more difficult to keep clean.

White would look good with the table legs, though, and look like a proper 'set'.

- Light tan sounds like it would go very well with the 'sand' colors you intend for your home, and can help add a bit of warmth to what may be an otherwise quite cold scheme in predominately white and blue.

This will also be easier to keep clean, and as a 'natural wood' feel will also go with other options in the future. The natural look will also be very beneficial with your 'natural' seashore style.

Do check, though, that the natural wood color is similar enough, or co-ordinates with the wood of your table top, as they will be seen as a set.

I think you've got lots to think about, so I hope this will help you to make your decisions.

If you haven't already, do take a look at my page on beach decorating for more seashore ideas

Good luck with the makeover of your beautiful home...

Do come back and show us some photos of your finished home here... - I'd love to see it

Big Thanks!
by: Mimi

Charlotte, thank you very much for your comments and direction. They've helped immensely.

Now I KNOW I'm going to buy the 6 dining chairs that are heaven to sit in. The dining room is all windows, too, and looks out over the beach so I know we'll all want to linger there. So comfort will take precedence!

I also appreciate your tip about making sure the tabletop and the color of the finish on the rattan chairs goes well together. I wasn't even thinking about that aspect! So I'm sure that will help me in my decision about whether to get the chairs in a painted or 'natural' stain finish.

I've never been part of anything like this (is this a blog?). I think this is such a fabulous idea. Am I allowed to ask other questions?

I'm going to be doing tons of work and decorating in the next six months there and would love to know I could use this venue for help. Is that permitted?

Again, thank you SO very much! And when I get each room finished, I will take pictures on my digital camera and beg one of my children help me send it to you so you can see the results!

Happy to Help!
by: Charlotte

Thanks Mimi

Happy to be of help!

Yes, of course, ask any questions you wish, as and when you come across them - I'll try to do my best to help

... please start a fresh topic thread/form for each separate question topic though (rather than just adding here - although of course you can follow up questions on the same 'thread' (topic), such as now) - it just makes it easier for me, and for readers to the website too.

This is the interactive section of my website - it's almost like a forum - where website readers can interact with me, and/or each other. But it all goes onto my blog too, so yes, it is a blog as well!

I look forward to seeing your photos - bet they'll be great!

Don't worry, photos are quite easy to add - there's a section on the form with instructions - you just click the 'browse' button and find the photo on your computer, but do let me know if you have any problems.

At the moment the form can initially accept only one photo - but if you have more than one you'd like to post (a few of the same room, for example) just let me know on the form and I will email you back and you will be able to send me the others by email for me to put on.

(Don't forget to include your email address on the message so I can get back to you - it won't appear anywhere on the website, or be used for any other purpose.)

Thanks very much for your participation Mimi.

I look forward to hearing how your projects progress and seeing your pictures.

Best wishes...

...and enjoy your lovely home!

Charlotte :o)
