Faux brick or stone paneling around the fireplace

We are wanting to cover the area around our fireplace with either faux brick or faux stone, but we want to also keep the decor contemporary and modern, rather than make it look out dated.

Which would be the best brick or stone look to go with?

Which colors should we stay away from?

Light and Simple!

Hi Angela

Great idea!

To keep it looking modern and contemporary, I would aim to keep colors pale and the style simple and streamlined.

Much will of course depend on the style of your home, and colors you have in the room (if you would like it to go with existing colors, or are planning certain colors)...

...but choose something neutral (so you have plenty of future color options), pale (light colored), and simple.

The company 'Brick-Anew' actually specialises in paints for making over brick fireplaces - these paints are much more suitable for painting over brick than ordinary paints, and you get a nice, even, smooth finish, with no cracking...

...it's actually very reasonable, so you might want to consider just ordinary bricks, (or brick 'slips' - very thin bricks) and then a coat of this specialist brick fireplace paint, rather than expensive colored bricks.

They have 3 main colors to choose from:

- 'Twilight Taupe' - a kind of sandstone or tumbled marble color - it goes well with tans, beiges, taupes and all mid-toned colors

- 'Frosted Sunshine' - a lovely soft color with cream and yellow tones - choose this color for your brick paint for a room with a lot of light tones, especially yellows

- 'Misty Harbor' - cream with tones of gray - choose if you have gray in your room as a neutral - or for rooms with contemporary gloss black, chrome and glass furniture and accessories.
