Flora oil painting above the sofa

Hi,
A friend of mine painted a beautiful floral picture for above my sofa. I love it, but the problem is its just about 24 inches wide, and framed makes it about another 3 inches all around.

My living room is 12x12. I feel the picture is too small for above the sofa where I REALLY want it. I was wondering is there something I can put on either side to balance it out.

I was thinking of metal wall art. I saw two on the net,and they looked like a branch with leaves. Each one was about 12x10 vertically.

No clue, can u help.

Pride of place!

How lovely to have such a nice picture that your friend has painted for you!

It definitely deserves pride of place!

It's hard to tell without knowing the dimensions of the sofa, whether you need any extra artwork to either side.

On a personal note, I would think a picture of that size, in a room of that size (it is about the same size as my own lounge) would look OK centrally positioned on the wall, above the sofa, on it's own...

...and you would need to be careful not to lessen the impact of the flora picture by what you choose to add...

...however, you have it in your room, and you clearly feel that something extra is needed...

I know the kind of metal wall art you mean - and it could look good.

Do make sure the metal wall art 'goes with' the painting - similar shapes, colors or styles will all make sure that they match well together and one doesn't overpower the other.

You could position the metal wall art close to the painting, kind of 'framing' it...

...or you could try the painting central, and the 2 metal wall arts more towards the corners of the room, so they are seen more as a separate entity.

It can be visually pleasing to aim for a triangle effect in art and interior design - in this case this would be the picture (top of the triangle) and the sofa (base of triangle).

Hope some of these ideas help you to make your decision.

You could try pinning paper 'mock-ups' to your wall in the various sizes and positions, to see which effect you like best.

A very good idea - I do like this effect - a large mount and frame can really emphasise the beautiful picture inside, as well as give the picture greater size and presence in the room...

...make a real feature out of it!

Hi Charlotte,
Thank-you so much for helping me decide.I was so surprised to see that I actually got an answer.I just figured I would take a shot in the dark,and there was my answer.

I will try the pic on its own like you said. I think it will work because I'm making it the focal point, and it is my first real oil painting, so it would be nice to display it alone as such.
