It's easy to overlook your hall or foyer - it's not a 'real' room, and you're only ever passing through...

...but actually, your hallway, foyer and stairs are very important parts of your home!

Your hall or foyer will usually be:

• the heart of your home (in a physical sense, if nothing else!)
• the main thoroughfare

You might just be passing though, but you do actually use your stairway and foyer a lot!

• It's often the first glimpse that visitors get of your home
• You can use your hallway for storage
• Or you can make the most of the space and even create extra rooms!

Decorating a Foyer to Get this Look

Hall and foyer decorating to get this look concentrates on:

• light colors
• warm colors - a pale yellow is an excellent, welcoming, friendly and bright (sunshine) color for a hallway!
• a spacious, simple and uncluttered feel

Your hallway also joins onto many, if not all, the rooms in your house, so it's a great idea to make colors in adjoining rooms work well together...

...particularly if you spend a lot of time with doors left open!

This is one reason why neutral colors work really well in hallways.

We nearly always find a rich cream is our favorite choice for hallways and stairs - we've found that a bright white is spacious, but is stark and cold, not welcoming at all!

Something light and neutral for foyer decorating, like cream, also helps the space feel bigger - which is very useful in lots of houses...

...particularly if you also extend the color up into narrow, or enclosed, stairways, stairwells and landings.

One flooring throughout helps the space to feel larger.

This may not always be practical, but do try and look at the effects of similar flooring texture and color in adjoining rooms, if you like a unified and spacious look.

Your hallway or foyer can also come in very handy as an extra space or extra room, too - your hallway might not be an extra room, but it could be nearly as big as one!
