Learn about foyer designs to help you make use of otherwise wasted space... What will you do with your hallway space? Your hallway could be your untapped resource! Your hallway could be wasted space! There's lots you can do with a hallway to maximise space in your home... If you're anything like us, your hallway could be almost as big as a small room!
We've had a quiet reading nook, and then space for my desk and home office under the stairs - the ultimate small home office! My parents, with 2 children going into their teens, and a new baby, turned a forgotten corner on a landing, into a surprisingly spacious shower room! Even a small landing could hold a desk, or a reading/library area, and under the stairs could also be perfect for a compact downstairs toilet! Even if an extra 'room' is not your thing, I'm sure that every home could benefit from a little more storage... So, don't let even an inch go to waste - but instead, explore some space-saving and creative foyer designs...
StorageTry custom-built storage to suit your exact space. Under the stairs is the perfect spot for custom-built cupboards and shelving, rather than the traditional, all-encompassing 'cupboard under the stairs', which can all too easily become a chaotic dumping ground! Open shelves are another option - and because you can see everything, you'll know just where everything is... ...and because it's on display, you'll feel inspire to keep it all neat! Consider labeled storage boxes, or baskets, to keep clutter under control, but maximise your storage space at the same time. More about clutter and storage solutions
Small Home Office Under the StairsWhen I first started this website as a work-at-home business, I started in an ultra-compact small home office, under the stairs... I wasn't sure if it would work out, so it all started very small, and we made a very cheap and easy conversion to our under-stair area... We found an off-cut of kitchen counter-top, which was, unbelievably, the exact size, to the inch! It was bracketed to the wall, at the back, and 2 spindles from a stair banister acted as legs at the front... We drilled a hole in one corner, for wires and cables. 2 simple wall shelves were adequate storage, for the few papers and pens I had in those days! We painted it all white, to keep it feeling spacious, and with a desk-lamp, and comfy office chair, the understairs small home office makeover was complete! The dog even lived under the desk with me, then! After a year or so, I progressed to a 'proper' desk, and now, after more than 3 years of an understairs small home office, I've graduated to the spare room, with space to hold all my books and papers! Great use of a tiny hall though! Have you got space under the stairs for your own home office? More home office design ideas to inspire you, here... Downstairs Cloakroom or Toilet under the StairsAnother popular use for foyer designs is to fit in an extra cloakroom or downstairs toilet under the stairs...
More about how to plan a bathroom You can also use these ideas to create an ensuite toilet, or separate shower-room on a landing... Foyer Designs and Ideas for LandingsMy parent built an L-shaped shower room on our landing, when I was a teenager... Shower, toilet and small hand basin, in a useful and compact space, with high-level glass bricks, to aid lighting levels, in both the new shower room, and the stair-well. This shower-room had a door off the landing, but it could just as easily have been knocked though from either of 2 different bedrooms, to make an en-suite, if that had been more suitable for family requirements. It became 'my' bathroom, for getting up early for school in the morning, and meant I could shower whilst my Dad was in the main bathroom - meaning more time saved for everyone! A very useful use of otherwise wasted space! A landing could just as easily be used for:
The key to getting the right landing or foyer designs for you is to think creatively about the space you have, and about the areas of your life, and your home, where you feel space is lacking... Then, just see what creative solutions you can come up with for your foyer designs...? Don't just go for the obvious way to decorate a hall - think about:
