I've been playing about with this tool, and trying out a few room designs for my own home.

I'm usually a great fan of paper and pencil layout plans (as I show you here...)

But this is so easy to use - I just wanted to make it available for you to use on my website...

How to Use

Instructions for using the RoomSketcher free interior design software tool...

  1. Sign in

    Get link and details here... - do come back and see our easy instructions for how to use it here, though

    • You can sign in easily using your Facebook profile if you wish
  2. Choose to:
    • use a template
    • draw your plan from scratch
  3. Walls

    Go into Walls mode (1) - bottom left of the screen

    • Here's where you draw your rooms
    • Click on New (top left)
    • Choose a room shape
    • Click on a wall and drag to resize your room easily - measurements are shown as you drag the walls
  4. Save as you go

  6. Add windows and doors

    • Go into Windows mode (2) (bottom left)
    • Choose a style of window or door
    • Drag and drop onto your plan
    • Click and drag to reposition or re-size
    • Click on Properties (top tool bar) to adjust the size, height from floor and the angle a door opens to
  7. Add Materials for Walls and Floor

    • Here's where you add your flooring, paint or wallpaper
    • Select Materials (3) on the bottom left of the screen
    • Drag and drop your chosen material onto your plan
    • Use the drop down menu to drill-down to which type of material you are looking for
    • Select where you want to use the material

      If you need help with choosing the perfect color click here...

    • If you want to make a feature wall with a different colored paint, or some wallpaper, you can do this too:

      • Make sure you are in the 'Walls' section. Then click on the individual wall you want to wallpaper or paint a different color
      • Click on 'Properties' (top left)
      • In the new box that appears select the 'Wall' tab, then select the room that the wall appears in - and use the drop down menu to select what you would like to put on the wall

  8. Add Furniture

    • Here's where you complete your room design by adding furniture and accessories
    • Select Furniture (4) on the bottom left of the screen
    • Use the drop down menu and images to select the furniture you like
    • Choose from popular real-life products, including Ikea, Pottery Barn and BoConcept (more than 4000 products available)
    • Drag and drop onto your plan
    • Click on your selected piece of furniture on the plan. Drag it to position where you'd like
    • Use the 'rotate' button to rotate the furniture so that it is facing the right way. (The larger green arrow points to the front of the piece of furniture to help you)
    • If you aren't sure how to arrange your furniture use my handy furniture arrangement tips to help
    • Don't forget to make sure you leave enough room to manoeuvre around your room safely and comfortably - use these measurements for ideal spacing to help you with this
    • On the online tool select 'Windows' and then 'Measuring Tape' from the picture icons and then 'Properties' to take measurements on your online plan.
    • You may still need to print out to scale to make sure you have enough space between furniture pieces (scale plans explained here)

    • Add accessories and even pictures and mirrors to complete your look
  9. Check how it looks

    This is the best bit of this interior design tool.

    • Position the green camera on your floor plan - drag and rotate so it is pointing at what you'd like to see in 3D
    • When the camera is in position, go to the top right of your screen and click on the icon of the camera 'Take Snapshot'.

    • The image appears in the box just below that icon (top right)
    • If you like the image click on Gallery to save it. Use 'More' to save to your computer or print your image.
    • Save your images to the 'Home 360' section and then generate a 360 degree rotating panoramic view of your whole room - very cool
  10. Save and print

    Save and print your floor plans (click on the 'Floor plans' tab - top right)

    • Print in 1:50, 1:100 or 1:200 scale
  11. Share your project:

    • Use the 'Share' icons to share on:
      • Twitter
      • Facebook
      • Google +
    • Copy the URL/link and share your project with your family and friends
