Furniture height

by Kathy
(Fresno)

Is there a maximum height recommendation for a sofa placed in the middle of a room?

The sofa I like is 38" high.

Try it out first... or nearly...

Hi Kathy

I don't think there is any maximum recommendation. It all depends on the size of your room, and the effects you want to achieve.

A low sofa is better if you want something unobtrusive in your room, but many people would use a high-backed sofa as an effective room divide.

If you aren't sure if the height of the sofa you like is suitable for your room, and the look you want to achieve, why not make a mock-up and try out the effect in your room.

Make something of a similar shape and size, out of chairs, boxes, clothers-airers, anything, making sure you have got the measurements of size approximately right for your proposed sofa purchase... cover with a sheet to get the 'bulk' in the room, and see if it looks too imposing, or just about right.

Do bear in mind that your new sofa will look a lot more attractive than a pile of 'junk' covered with a sheet, so don't be unduly put off, but do just imagine the size of our new piece and how it feels in the room.

I hope this helps and makes your decision easier.

Good luck with your sofa purchase and your room makeover

Charlotte
