Tips for Getting Rid of Clutter

Getting Rid of Clutter - Hints and Tips...

Helpful hints and tips for getting rid of clutter.

Do you feel like you are fighting a never ending battle against clutter building up in your home?

Get hints and ideas for how to organize clutter...

Do you and your home feel overwhelmed with clutter?

Conquering clutter and achieving and maintaining a clutter-free home can feel like such an up-hill struggle... I'm with you there!

But... conquering clutter hoarding and clutter control is achievable - it will just take, perhaps, a change in mindset, habits and some hard work!

The key to successfully getting rid of clutter is all about organization - this doesn't just mean getting up and tidying something away every time you've used it...

But it is about understanding how you use your living space, and how to organize your clutter to fit with the way that you live your life!

Let's take what may be quite an extreme example - after dinner and washing up in the kitchen, how many pots and pans do you think would get tidily put away if the pots and pans cupboard was upstairs in the bedroom - not many, huh?

Yes, I know this isn't likely, but clutter and 'stuff' building up around your home isn't just because you are 'lazy', untidy or dirty...

...you just need to come to a better understanding of how you and your family use your living space...

...and understand how to organize your clutter to suit your way of living....

Of course, you may also be the sort of person who likes to have a lot of ornaments and nick-nacks around - this is fine - some people do!

getting rid of clutter in your kitchen - keep cupboards clear for neat storage solutions

This, too, is not a problem and does not mean that you can't have a clutter free home - you may just need to think carefully about:
  • what you have on show
  • how it is displayed

Tips for Getting Rid of Clutter

  • Think carefully about how you live within your home:
    • What tasks do you do?
    • Where do you do them?
    • How often do you do them?
    • Who does them?
    • What equipment/accessories/'stuff' do you need to do them?
  • Also think carefully about the whole layout and functions of the rooms and spaces in your home:
    • Is there wasted space?
    • Would certain tasks be better done elsewhere in the home?
    • Are your family's needs changing?
  • Think in particular about areas such as:
    • Kitchens
    • Bathrooms
    • Living areas - books, CD's, magazines, DVD's, games...
    • Hobby areas
    • Homework, or home office areas
    • Bedrooms - clothing
    • Hall/Stairs - outdoor clothing, and general 'clutter'
  • Clear Clutter - no program for getting rid of clutter will succeed without a thorough and well thought-out clear out!

This is worth doing properly, so that you don't just end up shoving your clutter back into the back of a cupboard again.

getting rid of clutter - don't keep stuffing clutter in your closet

    • Clear clutter thoroughly - thinking carefully about if you really need these things.
    • Consider:
      • Selling - on eBay, or at car boot sales
      • Giving to charity
      • Packing things away into neat storage boxes
    • A good clearout can be very therapeutic!
  • Think about your storage solutions now you have some idea of how much clutter you need to clear...

    • Changing the layout of your home - can extra storage or fitted cupboards be fitted in garages, lofts, alcoves, understairs? What unused space do you already have?
    • Don't forget to keep storage solutions close at hand to the task they belong with, so your stuff and clutter is more easily put away.

  • getting rid of clutter - underbed storage can be very convenient

  • Divide your stuff into:
    • Items you use rarely
    • Items you use sometimes
    • Items you use daily or weekly
    • Items you like to display
  • Obviously, the items you use more often will need to be more easily accessible than those you rarely need - and your storage solutions should reflect this:

    • Items used daily should be close at hand and available in open storage without lids/doors, or unneccessary complications - easy to get out and easy to put away!
    • Items that you use sometimes can be stashed away in boxes with lids, or in cupboards - but still not too far from the area where they will be needed.

    • hatboxes can be useful for getting rid of clutter - either for hats or other items

    • Items used rarely can be stored in more 'remote' parts of your home - it doesn't need to be so easy to reach.
    • Think carefully about items you like to display in your home - nick-nacks are fine - but from a presentation point of view, less is usually more.

This allows you, and your visitors to your home, to really appreciate the ornaments that you do have on show.

  • It can be a good idea to rotate the ornaments and nick-nacks that you do display, so that you:

    • Don't have too many on show, leading to a cluttered look.
    • Appreciate what you have, more
    • Have an everchanging display
    • Can keep the others safely sored away, while you rotate on a mothly or seasonal basis.
  • Ornaments and nick-nacks look nicer displayed neatly on proper storage shelving or in display cases. Glass-fronted display cases can also reduce that annoying need to dust as well.

I hope these tips for getting rid of clutter can really get you thinking hard about clearing out, and actually how you organize your clutter.

Well thought-out organizing clutter and storage makes it so much easier to keep up and maintain your clutter-free home, after getting rid of clutter in the first place.
