Then, move onto the fun stuff ...

Inspiration

  • Whatever her age, your daughter is bound to have a favourite color, and lively interests and tastes - fairies, flowers, horses, cats, TV characters and shows. I'm sure the list in almost endless...
  • Whether these meet with your own personal preferences or not, you should definitely take her interests into account, when working towards your best girl bedroom decorating idea.

  • It will be really good for both of you to share input into her bedroom.
  • If she feels happy and comfortable in her bedroom, she will be ready to relax and spend time in her new room.
  • If she feels pleased and proud of her bedroom, she will want to keep it nice and tidy. (Well, there's an incentive if ever I heard one...!)

Choosing a Color and Design

  • Decide if you want to create a neutral background wall, and let the bedding, books, toys, games and posters, add a touch of color, and be the focus of your girl bedroom decorating idea, or theme.
  • This is a good option if you think your child might change her mind too often. It will save a lot of cost and work, to redecorate again within a short space of time.
  • But, without a common color or theme, to bring it all together, you may find that the bedroom lacks a certain focus. It could end up as a jumble of different bits and pieces, in lots of clashing colors.

  • You could choose a color, or group of colors, for your girl bedroom decorating idea. Try and take your daughter's color preferences into account. Children tend to go for bright and fresh colors - colors that look fun and friendly.

  • These may not be your choice, but as children use their bedroom for playing in too, it is right for them to have a room which offers them some visual stimulation, and that they want to spend time in.

  • Good colors for girls' bedrooms are pink, yellow, mint, aqua and lilac. If possible, avoid going for an allover pink (for example), or decorating the whole room in different shades of pink, as it may become a little sickly and overpowering.

  • Mix in white, to freshen up any color, and include accents of lots of bright, fresh colors, such as lime-green, orange, deep pink and blue.
  • Choose a wipeable paint, for a long-lasting finish. Aim for a fun, fresh and funky feel.

  • Pale colors may fit your theme better, but dark colors, and patterns, are more practical. They will show marks and stains less.
  • Pick washable fabrics where possible. Invest in some blackout fabric, to make curtains, or curtain linings, from. Make sure your child isn't disturbed by light shining through the window at night, and can get a decent quality of sleep.

  • Once they have chosen the color, many parents leave the walls a plain, bright color, and add colorful bedding, posters, pictures and toys, to create a theme or style centred around their daughter's latest interest.
  • This means that the theme of the room can easily be changed, as their daughter develops a new girl bedroom decorating idea, or style.

This is a great idea - lots of color and fun, but the details can easily be changed to suit changing tastes!

Get Creative

  • If you want to get creative, or if your child's tastes are fairly consistent, try adding a themed border, stencils, wall transfers, or even painting your own characters, flowers, fairies, animals etc. onto the wall.

  • If you fancy giving this a try, use an overhead projector, to project the design onto the wall. Trace over the projected design in pencil, then fill it in with paint.
  • Large pictures and murals on the bedroom walls, are great for young children. But, do bear in mind that your daughter may find these a little childish, as she grows up a little.

  • Motivate your daughter to feel part of your decorating project, with some simple craft activities.
  • Customise picture and mirror frames, bulletin boards and magazine files, with paint, cut-out photos and pictures, glitter, feathers, flowers etc. which match her room color and theme. (Take a look in craft shops and card-making stores for supplies.)

  • Also give her the opportunity to create her own artwork. Frame it, and hang it in pride of place. It could even be the inspiration for your whole room theme, or color scheme.

Furniture

  • Choose well-built, neutral-colored furniture, that is likely to last through childhood, into young adulthood, and will see out several decor changes.

  • Or, continue your girl bedroom decorating idea, and customise cheap, unfinished-wood, or second-hand, furniture. Paint it in a matching, or co-ordinating color, and add stencils, or patterns, to fit with your theme.

  • Girls may not need so much floor space for playing as boys, but will probably need a space for art and craft projects.

  • Girls will most likely need extra seating and sleeping areas, for having friends over to chat, and for sleep-overs.
  • Look out for day-beds, sofa beds, loft-beds with a sofa bed underneath, and trundle beds.
  • Also include loads of cushions, floor cushions and bean-bags, to create a relaxing, comfortable and welcoming area.

Spend some quality time with your daughter, talking through your girl bedroom decorating idea. You can have lots of fun, planning and doing, together. Together you can create a room she is pleased to spend time in, and that you will both be proud to show off.
