Green bathroom fixtures

I'm selling my home and need advise about how to update a master bath that has green marble fixtures (tiled walk-in shower, whirlpool tub and vanity sinks.

What color should I paint to play down the color of these fixures?

Modern and White
by: Charlotte

Hi

Colored bathroom suites can, unfortunately, have a habit of making your home feel old-fashioned when trying to sell... generally people prefer a nice, sparkling white suite.

If possible, it would be advisable to fit a cheap, modern bathroom suite in white, before selling... but I completely understand that in some situations this is not practical or possible...

When selling a house, the aim is to make the home as neutral and inoffensive as possible - so with this in mind, decorating as much as you can in a simple white, off white or cream can do much to help tone down the color of your bathroom suite.

Personally, I do quite like colored bathroom suites, and we had success in selling our previous home with a blue bathroom suite, where we had painted the blue tiles white (specialist tile paint), fitted a modern, new bath panel and accessories, modern shower curtain and the walls painted in the same blue as the bath.

So, if you wanted a color, a similar green may look good - or a soft pinky or peachy shade.

Make sure you take efforts to make the rest of your room feel as modern and clean as possible - a modern (white) bath panel, shower curtain or panel, mirror, cupboards, shelves etc.

Don't forget the finishing touches such as toothbrush holders, even a smart, bright picture can take attention away from the bath suite and give the whole room an air of contemporary style.

Give your viewers an alternative focal point (like a nice picture) that will be the first thing they see when they walk into the room - so they're not concentrating on the color of the bathroom suite.

Definitely choose some luxury fluffy towels in a modern accent color - with a white/cream/neutral room I would choose bright red towels - these will then be the first thing to catch the viewer's eye... and can all be taken with you when you move.

Plants or flowers too can help to give a welcoming impression.

And clean, clean, clean - a bathroom can't be too clean - and open windows (if you have them) to let in the fresh air too.

Think as if you are making your home as a show home, and make everything as nicely presented as possible for your potential purchasers.

Hope this helps you - and you get to sell your house soon.

Have you checked out my whole section on Selling homes and staging a house to sell, here for lots more house selling tips.

Best wishes in your bathroom makeover and your move.

'Green' Bathroom
by: Pauline Finch-Lee

Agree 100% with Charlotte's ideas to use white for the main colour.

If you have a window, choose a multi color fabric with lighter green than the tiles, peach, cream, and maybe a mauve color to give them depth.

I do love my mirrors, and you can make many designs with square mirror tiles (mix silver-backed with bronze tiles, as a real focal point on a wall - maybe the wall the vanity unit is fixed to,

Laying the tiles on their sides (i.e. diamond shape) rather than the usual flat shape can become quite a focal point - border them with normal border tiles.

As Charlotte has suggested extras can make all the difference, and make sure that the whole are smells fresh and looks bright.

Thanks for the ideas :o)
by: Charlotte

Thank you Pauline - some great ideas...

Mirrors are a wonderful way to bring light and space into any room - and of course are a very practical addition in a bathroom.

If you are selling a house it is also a good idea to get rid of any carpet in the bathroom - it can look as if it might be smelly and unhygienic - even if you know it is nothing of the sort!

A clean modern floor (even just a cheap vinyl floor covering) can be a great way of getting that nice, modern, clean feel to your bathroom, without having to change the suite.

Thanks again for sharing your good ideas Pauline.

Sure they will prove very helpful.

Best wishes

Charlotte
