guest bedroom

by jane
(Georgia)

My guest bedroom has a upholstery headboard in off white fabric.

I love my linen curtains hung from brown rods and rings.

I have a dark wood chest and nightstand.

My walls are off white or linen.

I need to continue to use my headboard and I love my drapes.

Any suggestions an bedding and paint for the wall?

Should I start with an upholstery chair? I have space for one.

I have a creme color matelse coverlet that belonged to my mother.

I need some "pop" in the room.

Your pick of the crop...
by: Charlotte

Hi Jane, you are very lucky, as the colors you already have in your room are all neutrals, so will pretty much go with any color you like.

Popular colors for bedrooms are earthy tones, such as greens, browns, taupes, terracotta, which would all go well with the 'natural' feel of your linen and brown curtains...

Or you could try pastels or soft muted colors - lilacs and mauves always seem to be a very relaxing choice for bedrooms. Pale greens and blues can make your room feel lighter and airier, and are very restful colors too.

If you wish, you can actually get away with using much deeper and darker colors than you would in the rest of the house. Deep, rich colors look good under soft, artificial lighting (used on an evening) and as it is only a guest room, you won't be looking at it for a long time, so it could be a good opportunity to go for colors you might not normally try...

Do avoid very bright, stimulating colors, such as yellow, red or orange, which are not very restful in a bedroom.

You could pick an upholstered chair first, but think whether you would prefer a neutral color that might go with future paint changes, or if you are willing to get it re-upholstered if you re-decorate the room. If you decide on getting a color (rather than neutral) it is usually easier to match the paint to the fabric, than to try to find a fabric to match paint.

If you don't want too much redecorating, an accent wall, of paint or wallpaper is easily done - and very effective, and you can add accessories and bedding in a brighter color (for that 'pop') without it being too overwhelming in the room. As an accent color like this, I find a bright fuschia pink can work well in a bedroom.

I hope that has given you a few ideas to work from, you really do have so many options available to you..!

Thanks for the advice. Should I choose a bedding pattern or paint first?

Choose the Bedding Pattern First...
by: Charlotte

Hi Jane

My pleasure!

I think, like the upholstery, it would be easier to choose a bedding pattern you really like first, in a color scheme you have in mind, and then find a precise paint color to match.

This is because, if necessary, you can get a paint mixed to match an exact color in your bedding, or fabric pattern, but you may struggle to find a pattern you like that matches nicely with an exact paint that you have already chosen.

Good luck, and hope you enjoy making over your guest bedroom

Charlotte :o)
