Help for a long narrow room

My room

This room was a patio that we enclosed.

It measures 9 x 20.

As you can see it has a patio door on one side. Also, on that side behind the chair is a gas wall heater.

We plan to raise the ceiling and angle it toward the inside wall. We will remove the panneling and dry wall it.

What I want is a TV/lounging room.

Any suggestions?

What a great project

Hi Peggy

Firstly, what a great project - it looks like a fantastic little room - and I hope you have a lovely view of the garden too.

Long narrow rooms like this one can be a little problematic - no-one feels like they can sit and relax in a long corridor, and it can just end up feeling like a waiting room.

But don't worry, there are plenty of interior design tricks to make your room feel better proportioned.

I think raising and angling the ceiling, and removing the panelling will really help.

To get a 'squarer' feel in the room, paint the long walls a pale color, but paint one of the end walls a dark or bold color.

For this end wall use a warm color - this is something like red, orange, terracotta, warm yellows, warm purples etc. This will visually bring that wall towards you, and create a cosier feel in the room.

You could make a real focal point of this wall, by painting wide horizontal stripes on the wall, or using a striking wallpaper, with a very bold, or large pattern.

Use downlighters rather than uplighters in your room, and keep to nice soft mood lighting - this will keep to the warm, cosy feel in the room - just right for lounging and watching TV.

Be careful how you arrange furniture in your room. Try not to line up your furniture along the long walls - this will just further narrow the room. You could try positioning your large sofa on one of the end walls (if it fits), or even on a diagonal across a corner.

With such a lovely long room you could even section off one end to create a snug, reading corner or computer desk.

You have plenty of lovely light coming into the room, so I think you will have fun and make a lovely job decorating it.

I'm sure it will be a fantastic place to sit and relax - I hope you will let us see it when it is finished.
