Help with a Staircase

We have built a new house and I have messed up the main staircase and need any ideas about how to fix it.

The stair treads are olive wood (a mid tone), the risers are white, and the spindles are black iron.

I had spec'd the handrail and post as paint grade and so they are made of maple, however I was told the post would stain fine so decided to match it to the treads which worked out reasonably well (except for the fact that the maple didn't take the stain quite as well as I would have liked).

The problem is that I had the handrail sprayed white and it looks terrible together.

I don't know if I should paint out the post white, paint the post and handrails black (or dark brown) to match the spindles or try to strip the hand rails (ugh) and stain to match the post.

Any other ideas would be great too!

Thanks for your help

White is alright!
by: Charlotte

Hello

Well, I think you've partly answered your question yourself - don't do the stripping of the hand rail to match the post - its a big job and the maple doesn't seem to take the stain that well anyway, you say.

It would be much easier to paint the post to match the handrail - and I recommend white as a color. It is hard to get wood painted black or brown and still look quality - and besides white is a 'safe' easy color for these sorts of things that won't go wrong, will match the risers you already have, and will also co-ordinate with any color you want to introduce for walls in there.

You should lightly sand your stained wood and use a suitable primer before painting in an appropriate paint.

I hope this information is helpful for you.

Good luck with your decorating project, and I hope you get your staircase sorted soon.
