This part of my home decorating guide deals with what happens once you have done the fun bit - (that's shopping, of course). Now comes the hard work.
Here's my best home decorating tip of all time - and one I always try and stick to. If you can, always try to persuade someone else to do the decorating for you - (eyelash flutter and sweet smile, in the direction of my other half ....... oh well, it was worth a try!)
Failing this, you will have to pay a professional decorator - or knuckle down, get dirty, and do the work yourself.
Check out this section of the home decorating guide, to find out how to make a successful and professional job of it. It is very important to do the work in the correct order. A little planning and preparation will mean it all gets done quicker in the long run. There will also be less mess, less upheaval, less cost, and less waiting around with your home decorating scheme half finished.
You've put a lot of time and effort into creating a gorgeous interior design scheme - so make sure you don't let your scheme down with poor planning and performance, while you organise the work.
Try and Keep to this Order of Works
- If you are using outside contractors, make sure you contact them early, to make sure they will be free when you require them.
- Order sofas, or other furniture, early - they can take up to 12 weeks to arrive.
- Order fabric - this, too, can take several weeks to arrive.
- Order curtains to be made - this can also take several weeks - so smile sweetly, and keep on good terms with your curtain-maker.
- Always get the messy jobs done first - you don't want to risk messing up your nice new scheme.
- Clear the room/site.
- Do any drainage or plumbing work required.
- Do electrical work - put in new, or change - sockets, switches, wiring for light fixtures, phone points, TV aerial points.
- Do plastering, if required
- Paint windows, doors, skirtings, dados, and other woodwork.
- Paint or wallpaper walls
- More electrical work - fit in light fixtures
- Put in new flooring
- Fit curtain poles or tracks - and blinds or curtains
- Install new furniture
- Add pictures, accessories and finishing touches!
