This inspiration board draws on home decorating trends which emphasise strong color, and bold patterns.

Personally, I love this look. After so many years of interior design trends being based on neutrals, whites and creams, I find it so nice to see the return of these bright, vibrant colors and bold, swirling patterns.

• This inspiration board covers several similar, (but slightly different) home decorating trends - all linked through the use of bold colors and strong patterns.


• On the far left, I show home decorating trends based on swirling, black, baroque or rococo patterns.


• Black and white, used in patterns together, is a strong contemporary trend. Make sure the patterns you use are bold.


• Use black and white patterns in your soft furnishings - especially curtains and cushions.


• Black and white patterned wallpaper also looks fantastically stunning. It is easiest to restrict the patterned wallpaper to one accent wall only. You will get a great impact and wow factor - without overpowering your room!


• Use the same bold, swirling shapes in accessories too, such as lighting.


• If black and white doesn't appeal, try mixing the same bold black patterns with other colors. All colors look good with black. So choose a color that appeals to you, and will suit your room.


• Really hot at the moment are all the gorgeous patterns in rich, vibrant jewel colors. Colors of the moment are: brown, strong turquoises, blues, pinks, reds and oranges. As long as it is bold and striking, it will do fine. Pick your color to suit your personality and your room.


• The patterns are bold and swirling - beautiful, large showy flowers and foliage, and retro paisleys.


• Wallpapers, used on one accent wall, and fabrics, are a really good way of incorporating these home decorating trends into your room.


• Very recent trends pick up on the same bold patterns and designs. They concentrate on zingy greens, limes and citrus colors, against a white background.


• Patterns are bold - but based on leaves and other foliage. The whole feel for this interior design trend is bright, bold and colorful. Again, I would advise concentrating the pattern on one accent wall of wallpaper - and add patterned fabrics for cushions and curtains.


• For all these linked, patterned, home decorating trends - pick a color or colors from the pattern to use in the rest of the room. Or choose a neutral to keep the feel calm - use white, or off white, or any tones of brown, from stones and beiges through to deepest brown. Brown is the color of the moment, to mix these new patterned trends with - but if you want to use a lot of brown, make sure it will not be too much for your room. • With such strong colors and patterns, try to keep other aspects of your design simple.


• Keep the shape of your furniture streamlined - nothing fussy - it will compete with all the patterns. Wood and rattan furniture is a very current look - and will match really well with these home decorating trends.


• However, if you are planning on concentrating on the black and white trend, consider keeping to black or white for the furniture too. Then you can bring in some of the same swirling patterns in the shape of the furniture too. Accent colors will look good with this trend too. But, keep colors in very small quantities - let the pattern do any extra talking!
