Traditional Christmas
House Decorating Idea

christmas house decorating idea

Choose a traditional Christmas house decorating idea, for a warm, homely Christmas. Create a gorgeous, welcoming home, for all the family to relax in, and have fun.

Never mind all those ultra-modern, black trees, white trees, cerise and aqua decorations. Create a simple and timeless traditional Christmas feel in your home. Invest in traditional style Christmas decorations, and you will be able to enjoy them year after year.

  • A real Christmas tree is a great focal point for your traditional Christmas house decorating idea. The smell of a real Christmas tree just really encapsulates Christmas. But, do bear in mind the needles, which will be stuck in your carpets for months to come.

  • A real Christmas tree costs money every year, whereas you only need to buy an artificial Christmas tree once.

  • A real tree will only last inside, and look nice, for a couple of weeks, so you shouldn't buy it too early. An artificial tree can be put up as early as you like.

  • Why not try a 'living tree', in a pot, which can be planted outside in January. If you buy a cut real tree, this should be recycled at special depots in January. Some councils may even collect old trees in January.

  • There are some really beautiful and realistic artificial trees around now - so choose one of these, if it suits your needs, and Christmas house decorating idea, better. We always have an artificial tree - far less hassle, I think!

  • Whether or not you choose a real Christmas tree, take the opportunity to bring lots of greenery into your home. It's a great feeling to bring a touch of nature into your home - especially on these short, and dark, winter days. And it's a really cheap and simple Christmas house decorating idea, to bring that luxury, festive look into your own home.

  • Get hold of some traditional holly, some mistletoe, but also any greenery that you happen to find in your garden, or local parks and woodlands.

  • If you can't find anything suitable, buy some eucalyptus and sea-holly, to add a little variety, to the usual seasonal greenery.

  • Pine cones are also a great house decorating idea for Christmas accessories, and are very easy to find in parks and woodlands. Keep them natural, or spray paint them in silver, gold or even red.

  • Use your seasonal greenery to create wreaths, to hang on walls and doors. Drape garlands of greenery over the mantle-piece and around stair banisters.

  • Make it all really glow with some pretty fairy lights. Simple, white fairy lights are best for a relaxing, traditional feel.

  • Also add some candles, and tea-lights in red votive holders, to really add to that warm, Christmassy feel. Of course, be very careful where you position naked candle flames, with all that greenery around.

  • Festoon your room and your tree with Christmas decorations in traditional colors. Base your Christmas house decorating idea around reds, greens, golds, silvers and bronzes, for a really traditional feel. Don't be afraid to add a few blues, or more modern pinks, aquas or blacks, to add a vibrant 'lift' to your room scheme.

Kids will love helping with the tree and decorations.

  • A simple gold or silver star, angel or fairy, is great for the top of the tree.

  • Add some simple, traditional decorations, such as ribbons, onto the tree, and around the house. Choose ribbons in red, gingham or tartan colors, and little wooden decorations. Even use some small gingerbread decorations, which can be tied onto your tree, and then eaten at your leisure - try to leave a few until at least Christmas, though!

  • A great Christmas house decorating idea is to create simple decorations and garlands from orange and lemon slices:

    • Simply cut oranges, lemons or other citrus fruits into slices approximately half a centimetre thick.

    • Cut the fruit so that each slice has a centre point (or hole) in the middle, with the segments arranged in a circle around this point.

    • Arrange the slices flat onto a baking tray.

    • Bake in the oven at 120 degrees Centigrade/Celsius, or 250 degrees Fahrenheit, or at Gas Mark 'half'. Bake until the slices are hard, but not browned.

    • Remove and cool.

    • Make them into garlands, together with some of your greenery, attach ribbons and hang onto your tree, or arrange in festive bowls with pine cones.

  • Display your Christmas cards on a specially designed card holder - or make your own cardholders with red ribbons, or even strips of Christmas wrapping paper. Hang the ribbons vertically from pictures (secure with a little tape at the back of the frame), or horizontally across the room, or hung from banisters. Tape or pin your cards to the ribbons.

  • Don't forget your festive table settings when planning your house decorating idea for Christmas.

  • Try to continue your chosen Christmas color scheme for your festive table - red, gold and green are great for a traditional look. Get the look with table cloths, napkins, and table runners. Decorate your table with garlands of greenery and candles.

  • Create cheap, easy and attractive Christmas napkin rings, with a contrasting ribbon tied around your napkin, with a simple decoration, such as a star, or snowflake, attached. You could even thread a piece of card onto the ribbon, for your own, personalised, Christmas message.

  • Above all, for your Christmas table - don't forget the crackers!

  • Create a dramatic centre-piece for your table. This is a great opportunity to get creative, and come up with something beautifully individual for your festive table:

    • Try jugs filled with seasonal greenery.

    • Use simple garden pots - place a piece of florist's oasis inside, and then pop in a simple candle in red or white. Surround the candle with a few choice pieces of greenery. Tie pretty ribbons around the candle or pot. Choose one larger pot, several smaller ones, or a combination of sizes.

    • Use a large platter, bowl or tray and cover in gold wrapping paper. Arrange some church candles of several different sizes, in the bowl or platter. Then, add greenery, pine cones, nuts, dried orange or lemon slices. Star anise spices also make unusual, and deliciously scented, Christmas decoration additions.

    • A very simple centre-piece can be created by placing one church candle in a storm lantern, glass vase or bowl. Place a little ivy, trailing around the base, or fill with colored baubles.

  • If you've got kids, or even if you are a bit of a kid yourself at heart (...and who isn't really?), don't forget to hang your stockings by the fireplace.
