How to furnish an L-shaped room

by Melissa

I have an L-shaped sunroom that I can't figure out how to furnish. The bottom part of the L is about 15 ft long. It has a wood stove in the middle and a sliding-glass door across from the wood stove. The entire wall by the sliding glass door is windows.

The top of the L has french doors (right next to the the sliding glass door --about 4 ft. between the two), and steps. There are several bathroom/bedroom entries. The bedrooms come off the very top of the L at the other end from the french doors and the bathroom entry is on the same side as the stairs.

It's a complicated space. Right now I don't have anything because I can't decide what to do.

Any ideas would be appreciated,

A blank canvas, you lucky thing...!
by: Charlotte

Hi Melissa

Your sunroom sounds gorgeous! I'm very jealous! :o)

It sounds like you have pretty much a blank canvas right now - which in interior design terms is a great thing, as you have free reign to do whatever you want in there .... although it can be a little bit like starting to write or draw on a blank page, where to start? what to put? suddenly your whole mind goes blank!!

Well, don't panic, and don't rush the process! I think it's far better to think things through carefully, and get what you really want, than just choose something for the sake of it and end up hating it and having to change things, or do it again!

Have you checked out the section on my website called How to Design? This takes you through the whole design process that interior designers use to get ideas for a project, and then put those ideas into practice. Take a look at the section, you may find it helpful, although you may not actually require all the sections for your own sunroom project.

Your sunroom sounds like a fantastic space. To get started think about how you want to use your room? ...what do you want to do in there? This will help you get some idea of what you need to include in your room.

It should also help you think about how you want to feel in your room. Is it a room for being busy? relaxed? silly? serious? This can help you decide the 'feel' for your room, ...cosy? relaxing? outdoorsy? formal? etc... This can also affect the colors you can choose.

Check magazines (or the pages of this site) for any photos that inspire you. You might like to make a mood board, to help you get ideas (there are more details on this in the 'How to Design' section).

Or do you have a painting, or other piece of art or furniture, that you want to include in your sunroom to inspire you?

Or you could get your inspiration from the great outdoors. I'm guessing with that entire wall of windows you have some great views! Why not try bringing the outside in?

Don't worry too much about the 'L' shape being a problem with arranging furniture. Drawing a quick layout plan should help you to make sure that your furniture is well arranged for the space (again there is more help on this in the 'How to Design' section).

Melissa, I think your sunroom sounds absolutely great, and I think you can have great fun planning your design and putting it into practice.

I wish you much luck with your decorating project, and hope you will let us all know how it progresses, or maybe even send us a photo of the finished project?

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
