• Research your estate agent well!
  • Do your research well when choosing your estate agent (or real estate broker/agent/realtor). Look out for:
    • membership of a professional body
    • charges/commission
    • testimonials and recommendations (especially from people known to you personally)
    • their profile and record in your chosen area
    • how they interact with potential clients and show homes
    • online presence
    • newspaper advertising
• Consider an online agent:
  • this can be cheaper
  • online house sale/purchase searches are on the increase
  • but you may miss out on shop window and local newspaper marketing




• Consider marketing your home yourself:
  • this will be considerably cheaper
  • you are in control of all aspects of the marketing
  • but it is a lot of responsibility
  • your marketing efforts may lack the 'clout' of the big companies
• Think carefully about the price:
  • Don't just automatically choose the highest price - it may be too high, and out of the reach of many potential buyers
  • Decreasing the price if your house has been on the market a while can generate a surge of new interest









• Keep on your toes!
  • Keep in touch with your chosen estate agent/real estate broker, and ask them how they are promoting your property
