Ideas for a window and a door...

by Stephanie

Hi:

I love your site. I am at a loss and wondered if you could suggest some things for me.

I have a rectangular sitting room, as you walk in from the stairs, there is one window in the far right corner and one door on the far left corner, the rest of the room is wall space.

I am just not sure what to do with them. I thought I might do the one panel with tie back for the window but I just don't know what to do with the door and make it look pleasing to the eye.

Thanks for any help you can give.

A door becomes a window.... well, almost!
by: Charlotte

Hello Stephanie

Thanks for contacting me and for your kind comments about my website - I'm glad you like it! :)

Doors can be particularly challenging to hide - if they are in an awkward position, or if you would just rather they weren't there...

Of course, if this is a door you will need to use frequently, or from time-to-time, you will need to make sure there is ample space to use the door safely.

If you are not intending to use the door, you can treat as a window or wall, and just position furniture in front of it, as if it weren't there - this can be particularly useful in smaller rooms, short of space.

A door you wish to disguise should be painted in a neutral, pale color, or in the same color as the surrounding walls, so that it doesn't 'draw attention' to itself so much.

A door with glass in (full-length or even just the top half) can be more attractive, and can almost 'double up' as a window (even if it's just another room, or a hallway, on the other side), and can add to the feeling of lightness and space in your room.

In this way it also becomes easier to treat the door and the window in a similar fashion, to bring a more unified feel to your room. If possible it is a good idea to make your window and door treatments match in style and shape, for a greater sense of symmetry.

Simple window treatments can help disguise a door, at the same time as dressing the window. Steer clear of 'over-fancy' window treatments (unless they are intended to cover/disguise the door completely) as these tend to just draw more attention to the unwanted item - so try to keep it simple.

A simple net curtain or voile does excellent service disguising our front door in our living room, and we have heavier curtains positioned either side, in the usual manner of a window, to help with this idea.

Even if you use your door frequently, a net or voile can be attached to the top of the door itself, so that it moves with it, but when closed, gives more of a subtle, window effect - if you decide to do this, attach the fabric top and bottom so it doesn't become a nuisance swishing about.

I hope that this has given you some ideas for your window and door problem - if you haven't already done so, please take time to check out the section on window treatments for more ideas, hints and tips.

Good luck with your window and door problem.

Best wishes

Charlotte :)
