The sun is streaming in through the windows - it makes you think it is about time for a Spring clean - and a look at some great Spring decorating styles...
Well, finally the sun has come out and we have been thrust from Winter, right into Spring. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining … I love the warm Spring sunshine, pretty flowers and promise (or hope!) of a wonderfully hot Summer…
But suddenly, when the sun comes out, my home looks far too wintery and dull – I need a Spring makeover and ideas for Spring interior decorating styles…
When Spring arrives and the sunlight streams into my home, I find the first thing I notice is that my house looks very dusty - I guess that is why they call it Spring cleaning then…!
A really good place to start your Spring makeover is a good clear out and Spring clean. Take stock of any old magazines hanging around, or bits and pieces that haven’t quite got tidied away …yet! Or ornaments and accessories which you have just grown bored of looking at. Pack tired old stuff away to make room for a more Spring-like feel.
Once I have had a good clear out and wiped down all my surfaces so that they are shiny and clean, it makes my home feel much more Spring like.
The next thing, to enjoy more Spring-like interior decorating styles, is to let the sun and the outdoors in. I take down my heavy winter curtains, and instead put up light and floaty white voiles, or pretty, patterned, cottons or chintzes.
Pull curtains and blinds well back, to let the sunshine right in, and even open your windows to let some fresh air in…
Then, see if there are items in your rooms that just seem a little too ‘wintery’ now that Spring has arrived. I like to change my big, cosy faux-fur throws and wintery cushions, for something a little lighter.
Items that you might have chosen to feel cosy and warm over the winter, such as faux-fur, velvets, cord and warm colors such as deep reds, burgundy and browns, might just be too much for Spring interior decorating styles…
Instead, I try to choose items in light, fresh colors, which bring to mind Spring and Spring flowers – a fresh white, bright greens, aqua, yellows, pinks and oranges are great colors for bringing a fresh, lively, Spring-like feel to your home.
If your home is decorated in fairly neutral tones, or even if you have decorated in deeper colors, introducing some accents of these Spring like colors will really help your home to feel like it belongs in Spring now – without the whole hassle of repainting or decorating.
Look out for accessories which really suggest Spring – anything with birds, flowers and butterflies will give instant Spring appeal. Look for little ornaments, as well as pictures and paintings, curtains, cushions and throws.
I do find the best way to bring a splash of Spring interior decorating styles into your home, is by bringing the outdoors in – yes, plenty of plants, greenery and especially fresh flowers. Jars and vases of Spring flowers give that instant shot of ‘Spring’ and really lift the spirits.
Try to make a real feature out of your Spring flowers – position a large vase centrally on a mantle, or in the centre of your kitchen or dining table. If you think carefully about your positioning of your flowers, they can become part of your Spring décor and will really enhance the Spring-like feel of your room.
