Interior Design for Manufactured Homes

by Linda G
(Gasquet,Ca)

Hi, Just found your web-site and I live in a Manufactured home that has been redone several years ago, now I want to redo it for me & my husband.

This is on my bucket list to redo my home before I have to leave, the way I want to.

We are on a very limited income, but feel it's a great project to keep us busy & in good health, both physically & mentally.

Anyway what I would like to know is how to transform my home into a colorful retreat to be happy in & why people haven't done more about manufactured homes, there is so many of us that need help decorating them, could someone come up with a show or magizine to help us?? :) please...

Linda

Manufactured Magnificence!
by: Charlotte

Hello Linda

Well done for deciding to decorate your home to suit you!

There's no reason why a manufactured home can't be interior designed and decorated just like any other home...

There may be some small differences and quirks, but I think that all adds to the unique character and charm of your own home, and I'm sure, with a little creative thinking you'll find that any small obstacles can be worked around, incorporated into your design, or may even become a design feature!

You don't give too many details of your own manufactured home, but I'll try to give you some general tips and ideas that I hope will help out...

Manufactured homes can sometimes be on the small side - this is in common with many non-manufactured homes, too, and is quite easy to work around. Pale colors and cool colors (blues) are great for creating a feeling of space in a room, and for lightening it up too...

Some ideas for decorating small spaces, here...

Another common problem for manufactured homes are the walls - these might be metal, they might have awkward panels or strips, they might have old vinyl wallpaper...

All these can be overcome - panels or strips can be painted in a rich or bright color (so the differences are less noticeable) or you can enhance the panels by adding extra battens and strips to create a full panelled effect (squares or rectangles).

Or you could add tongue-and-groove wainscotting over the top, for a completely new wall-covering.

You can also add in any architectural details which might be missing, such as skirtings, coving, door-frames etc.

You can paint or wallpaper in colors and patterns of your own choosing (make sure you read instructions and choose appropriate primer, paint, paste if you have an unusual wall-surface to cover).

Wood can be painted in white to give a lighter and more modern feel, and you can also fit new cupboard doors, or paint any fitted cabinets or cupboards you might have - we've just done this in our kitchen - what a difference!

Here's what we did...

If you love colors, take a look at my 'Decorating with Colors' section to help you to choose the best options for you and your home - as I said before, light colors and cool colors are great for making a space feel larger...

...but don't discount stronger tones, as these can really create a homely and personal look in any space.

Continues from above comment

Continues from above...

Warm reds, golds and oranges will give a really cozy look (although they may make the space feel a little smaller and/or darker)...

Yellows give a bright and welcoming feel - very cheery - and will give a cheerful and welcoming, friendly feel to any room...

More about decorating with color and combining colors, here...

If space is tight, choose smaller-scale furniture, and think carefully about your layout...

More about your layout and arranging furniture, here...

If your home is quite open plan the page on open plan living areas and apartment decorating ideas can really help.

New colors, revamped upholstery and fabrics can make all the difference - for some budget and time-saving ideas take a look at my fast-fixes and budget ideas pages....

If you'd like any more inspiration, just take a look at the manufactured home in the next link - stunning!

(Opens in a new window)

I hope some of these ideas for manufactured home living have really helped - if you're feeling a little overwhelmed, why not start at the main How to Design page, and work through the list, to create your own well-thought-out design...

Good luck with your makeover - do come back and ask if you need any more help, or if you come across any specific problems, whilst decorating, which you think we can help you with.

Do come back and let us know how you get on, and share your photos

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
