Interior Design Help for Hallway Please

by Elise
(Brooklyn, USA)

Hi. Just came upon your site. It is great and I have added it to my favorites.

I have a painting project for my hallway, which goes upstairs to my tenants apartment. We live in Brooklyn.

The walls are antique white, and the waynes coating is a pucky tan color. The floor is wood. What color do you suggest I repaint the waynes coating?

Thanks, Elise

Pale and cool tones for long narrow rooms...
by: Charlotte

Hi Elise

Thanks very much for your comments about my site. It is lovely to know that people find it useful.

With regard to your painting project - I think you can pretty much choose any color you want, to go with antique white, and wood. But here are some suggestions and things to think about...

Definitely paint your waynes coating a darker color than the top (especially for rooms like hallways, that can tend to look dark and narrow).

If you do have a problem with your hallway feeling dark and naarrow, I would suggest keeping to something fairly light or pale, and a cool color (basically greens, turquoises and blues).

Blue and green are very good for lightening and brightening smaller or narrow spaces, and feel quite calm, relaxing and are very good for neutral areas/public areas, like hallways.

And I always find that pale blue looks stunning against any mid tone wood like cherry, pale oak or pine, or dark woods like teak, mahogany, dark oak etc.

If your hallway is a fair size, I would suggest a pale yellow or lemon for the waynes coating - it is a wonderfully welcoming color, and feels bright and cheery (lots of halls do need that cheery touch of sunshine to brighten them up a bit!) (yellow will visually bring your walls in slightly though, although as long as you keep the top half a nice, airy, pale antique white, this shouldn't be a huge problem).

Otherwise, you are pretty much free to choose whatever you fancy. I am sure the results will look great!

I hope the decorating goes well.

Chocolate Mint Candy!
by: Elise

Thank you so much for your advice.

I did paint the waynes coating and trim and moldings in a medium pale green - and it looked great near the wood, but terrible against the linen white wall, so i got a chocolate brown and painted the trim in the brown.

My hall looks like a chocolate mint candy and looks great.

I am very happy with the way it came out.

Thanks for the suggestion.
