This look is inspired by old-fashioned French interior design style – beautiful and romantic, as well as being elegant and sophisticated.
I prepared some mood boards to give you some inspiration and to give you some ideas to really get the look with the types of products available on the High Street.
I really like this look – it is pretty and feminine, but certainly not twee. The style is traditional and classic, which gives it the elegant feel that I really like, and that you always associate with the French.
I find that this is an ideal style for bedrooms and living rooms, but really it can work well in any room of the house – you may very well end up with your whole house taking its interior design inspiration and ideas from a French interior design theme…
The scheme tends to use pale colors as a base (with richer colors as accents) so it ends up giving quite a tranquil and relaxed feel – I think this is what makes it so suitable for your relaxation rooms, such as bedrooms and living rooms.
The pale colors also mean that the scheme can be used successfully in small or dark rooms, and can add a feeling of greater space and light to your home – which is always a good thing.
The mood boards that I have prepared give quite a selection of different styles and colors, so just show how much variety you can include in your interior design ideas, and still get the same general look and feel.
For the Basics…
Keep the overall look pale – creams and muted whites or warm neutrals are a good look for this theme. Accent colors are quite rich and patterns are used quite extensively so it is a good idea to keep the base colors quite simple.
Your choice of furniture is very important to get the look. The style is antique (or reproduction antique). It doesn’t necessarily have to be genuinely French, but it does need to be in a traditional and quite ‘fancy’ style, with delicate proportions.
Furniture is mostly painted white or cream to get the French interior design look. Also choose attractive, antique style drawer pulls and door knobs. This attention to detail can really help to get an authentic look. If you can’t find the perfect piece, or if you can’t get furniture pieces to match, painting similar pieces in cream or white, and adding matching knobs and pulls, is a very effective idea.
Pattern is another very strong theme for these interior design ideas. The patterns themselves are quite delicate and traditional – nothing too bold or modern for certain.
The colors to choose for accents, such as wallpaper, curtains, bedding, cushions, throws etc are quite deep, warm colors – rich colors, but with a muted tone. Common choices are rich reds, russets, maroons, purples, pinks, even greens, teals, blues and greys.
Accessories are another very important way of bringing all your interior design ideas together into one cohesive scheme.
Important accessories for getting this look are:
mirrors – in a fancy style, and frequently in an oval shape
chandeliers – cut glass (or imitation cut glass) give a beautiful effect
oversized old-fashioned clock
pretty scatter cushions and throws with complementary patterns
plenty of beautiful fresh flowers to complement the fresh, feminine feel
