Interior Design- Small space suggestions!

by Rebecca
(Seattle)

Help!

I have a very small dining/ living area which is a corner shape (2 large windows comprise the corner walls) and I am having issues with ways to decorate/ add furniture (especically adding a small table and chairs) into it.

Any advice?

Play around with a layout plan...
by: Charlotte

Hi Rebecca

Thanks for the diagram.

You don't say how large/small your area is, or how many of you are in the house/apartment?

In general for decorating small spaces, look at decorating in light and cool colors, and shiny or glossy surfaces (such as glass and mirrors).

Find more tips for decorating small spaces here.

As far as adding furniture into the room, I recommend drawing a scale plan of your room, and playing about with cut-out pieces of furniture, to see what will fit best.

Click here for help with doing this.

I think with a small room, you should try to include only the absolute essentials for furniture. Do you need a chair as well as a sofa? How many chairs do you need round your table?

Shop around for slightly smaller scale options for furniture - much of the furniture around these days is just way too bulky for the slightly smaller home.

Would a table that folds down be suitable? or one that folds up into the wall? Can you manage with a breakfast bar?

You could position your table in one of the corners for space ... but you may actually find that it looks better set into the center of the room a little more (if there is space to do this!).

The table or a sofa could both fit nicely under the windows.

Do think about the way you want to use your space as well ... you don't want to be tripping over your 'lounge' paraphernalia to get to your dining area (or vice versa) so make sure that you leave a clear pathway through the room, for convenience and safety.

In this case, positioning the table and chairs in the corner nearest the kitchen may be a good idea.

Also make sure you position any seating to get a good view of the TV (including the dining seating, if you intend to watch while you eat).

What do you think?

I hope this has helped you get a few more ideas.

Good luck with your decorating plans, do let us know how you get on.
