interior design tips for privacy and overlooked areas

Interior Design Tips to Protect Your Privacy...

Is your home your haven? If you are troubled by nosy neighbours, or close proximity to roads, other houses and pavements, check out these easy interior design ideas and tips for privacy in overlooked areas...

Window treatment tips and ideas for creating privacy within your own home too...

Home is our own private space, where we can be ourselves, do what we want, wear what we want ....... or it should be!

Too often in the modern world, our homes are overlooked and lacking in privacy - and this doesn't just apply to the neighbours - but to feelings of privacy within the home, and between individual rooms and areas, too.

Although you clearly can't move your home away from a busy thoroughfare, or prying neighbours, these interior design tips can do wonders for helping with a feeling of privacy in your home...

Interior Design Tips for Overlooked Areas

For homes overlooked by busy roads, or nosy neighbours, your windows and window treatments are a big issue.

You can still create privacy in your room, without sacrificing the light coming into your home...

Ideas for Window Treatments

  • Simple voile panels - these are less 'fussy' than net curtains
  • 'Cafe curtains' on the bottom half of the window only.

  • Roller blinds fitted upside down to the bottom of the window can be pulled half-way up, or all the way.
  • Venetian blinds can be twisted for privacy, but still to allow the light in.
  • Consider fitting skylights or high level windows, to allow more sunlight in, but keep your privacy.
  • Replace the bottom half of windows with frosted glass, or with special frosted transfers or window films.
  • A screen or shutters can give a funky alternative to curtains or blinds
  • Use plants on windowsills inside, or windowboxes outside to provide pretty screening and privacy.

Within the Home

  • Think about screening areas with:

    • Moveable screens - go for a:
      • contemporary
      • funky
      • ethnic

...feel, suiting your own sense of style.

    • Sliding or foldable doors
    • Glass blocks
    • Hanging fabric panels or curtains - particularly suitable for use around sleeping areas, or cosy reading or TV areas.
