I know I used to be - just keep it simple I thought - less chance of making a mess!

Certainly, if you use pattern wrongly, it really can make the worst mess - and your mistakes really are blindingly obvious!

But that's not going to happen to you...

Not now you have got these interior design tricks and tips to using pattern well.

And, when you can use pattern - and get it right - you can create designs that are really bold, interesting and unique.

Even if you don't want to use such bold patterns, subtle patterns can help to add interest, depth and texture to your room.

Here's how you do it...

• Choose a pattern you really love - you don't want to get bored with it and redo after only a short while.









• A beautiful and unusual pattern that you do really love can stay fresh in your home for years - because you keep on loving it.

  We have some beautiful patterned wallpaper in the bedroom - we love it, so it still seems fresh to us... eight years after we put it up.

• Use a bold or strongly patterned wallpaper or curtain fabric, as a good starting point, to put together your whole interior design scheme.
• Combine a pattern with plain colors, picked out of the pattern design.
• Consider using patterned wallpaper on one wall only - as a focal point in its own right.

  Or use it to highlight another feature such as a chimney breast, or fireplace.

• If you want a calm, restful or minimalist style, think about using very subtle patterns to add interest to your design...

  For a subtle pattern concentrate on the color you pick - choose a very similar color to your main color scheme...
  
  

  

  
  
  In this way your pattern becomes more of a texture...

  It adds interest and depth to your decorating, without being fussy or overwhelming.

  It's a good look and a very good way to get started with patterns.

• Think twice, and make sure you really are certain - before investing a large amount of money on a patterned sofa or 3 piece suite.

  Do you really love it? Are you bothered if trends change - and your furniture looks old fashioned after a few years?

• Combine patterns with:
  
• Similar themes - eg. florals, checks, or stripes. (Make sure you don't overdo it though)
• Similar color schemes and color families
• Bold patterns can be combined well with smaller patterns - but try not to go to both extremes - it will just look mismatched.
• Florals always combine well with stripes - especially for a country decorating style.









• The picture above shows a fresh, clean, country feel - plain, bold colors - mixed with simple stripes and floral patterns
• Use the same pattern in different colors
• Top interior design trick for combining patterns - always make sure the patterns have something in common - color, theme, style.
• Be careful if you want to use stripy wallpaper on slightly wonky walls - it will only emphasize any faults.
• Vertical stripes can make a room look taller
• Horizontal stripes can make a room look wider
• Large patterns are best in large rooms - although for a dramatic statement, they can look stunning in tiny rooms, such as cloakrooms.
• Small patterns are best for decorating small spaces - they tend to just look fussy, in large spaces.
• For a restful effect, use small patterns, lighter colors, and simple geometric patterns.
• Bold patterns, strong colors and swirling patterns can be very visually stimulating, but can make a room feel cosy too.
