Interior Design Color - Blue

Interior Design Color Schemes - Focus on Blues

Ideas and inspiration for using interior design color schemes. How to use blues in your decorating color schemes. Which colors go with blues...

Do you love blue? Wish to use it in your color schemes, but aren't quite sure how...

Let me help you, by introducing a few ideas for your color schemes, and different looks you can go for with blue...

Blue is a lovely, calming and relaxing color - the color of peace and tranquility. It is an ideal color for using in any room where you wish to relax - such as a bedroom or living room.

Blue is also quite often used for bathrooms and kitchens, probably because of the 'watery' connections.

Blue is also a cool color. This means that it can be used to make your room feel larger. It can also make your room feel cold and stark though, so do use it with care.

Darker and brighter blues give a more dramatic feel. Paler blues are cooler and more soothing. Blue can take on quite different feels, depending on the colors you use with it. Hopefully this page will give you some good ideas on how best to use blue in your own home.

For more information about combining colors, look at these decorating color schemes, and tips on using the interior design color wheel.

    • muted blues

    • fresh, zingy blues
    ...etc...

  • Mix deep to light tones, and similar shades together, to create a very soothing, calming feel - a simple scheme, (very hard to mess up), but one with interest still.

Blues and Oranges/Yellows

interior design color blue and orange

  • The complementary color of blue is orange. This makes a very dramatic and striking interior design color scheme.
  • To avoid the color clash becoming overpowering, only use the orange as an accent color in small amounts.
  • Blue and yellow - particularly in the paler, fresher shades is also a very popular choice. This can be used for a fresh, spring like feel, or even a seaside, beachy type feel.

Blues and Greens

  • Blues go fantastically well with greens. Mix blues with turquoises, teal, jade etc, all the way through to green.
  • Try to choose similar tones (the lightness/darkness of the color) of the different colors, for the best effect.

  • Darker colors can give a rich, jewel like effect. Paler colors can give a very mellow, natural feel.

Blues and Purples

  • Blues and purples can give a lovely rich look to your interior design color schemes. Try to stick to mixing purples with blue undertones, with your blues, rather than going straight for those with pink or red undertones.

  • interior design color blues lilac

  • You can go dark, with very rich tones, for a luxurious feel - or keep it pale with lilacs, for a softer, or fresher feel.

Blues and Neutrals

  • As is the case with all colors, blues do go very well with neutral colors - both light and dark.

  • interior design color, blue and pale neutrals, whites creams

  • Try pale creams and whites. Especially look for whites with:
    • yellow tinges
    • peachy tinges
    • soft beiges and browns
    also darker beiges and browns.

  • interior design color pale neutrals

  • Blues seem to go stunningly well with all kinds of beiges and deep browns. A very pale blue against a deep chocolate brown is one of my personal favorite color combinations, and does give a very pleasing and dramatic effect.

Of course, this is actually only a small selection of the countless interior design color combinations that you can try with blue...

Get some paint swatches (and later on, use tester pots) and play around with different effects in your room. Use a color wheel for more help with combining blues with all different colors.

I recommend this 'Color Scheme Sourcebook' for an excellent source of color combining ideas.

Use a bit of creativity and imagination, and I am sure that you will come up with some very unique and beautiful effects for your rooms.
